Aint seen a beer thread around these parts and figured that some might be thirsty after blowin too much hot air elsewhere. I know I am.
So with Poms, Yanks, Aussies, Yarpies, Greeks and whatever other nationalities we got here I reckon "A World Biker Beer Off" is in order. Here goes..............
A lot of Aussies have state affiliations when it comes to beer - e.g. XXXX in Queensland, Tooheys in New South Wales and Vic Bitter in Victoria - but the lines are pretty blurred these days and there's more of a national market.
But being a born and bred Queenslander I'll be a XXXX man forever. Anything else just aint right.
Don't mind Bud and my wife likes Millers. Corona occasionally gets a show as does, Heineken and Stella.
But I can't think of a beer from the old country that gets me too excited. Sorry guys.
Oh, and I always keep some Fosters handy just in case I need to wash the dog. But even she hates it.

All swill. Oh, I'll drink it if it's free and truly ice cold so it freezes the taste buds. All SWILL nevertheless. (Please note I excluded Stella from that swill list).

Don't forget the Swan for the guys out West. I drank a lot of that back when the boat was in Perth. If we want a real fight BEER ought to do it

Finally, an educational thread . I usually buy my beer at Costco, so the selection not always the best. They've had Stella Artois lately, and that's some good beer (11.5 ounce bottles though  ). My usual cerveza is Pacifico, much better than Corona. I don't know what it is about Mexican beer that requires the lime wedge, but it's good .

We have this new place in town called Total Wine which is somewhat of a misnomer as they have over 1000 beers too!!!
Love the porters and dark ales so my top three there are Samual Smith's Taddy Porter, Fuller's London Porter, and Newcastle Brown Ale.

My uncle had a keg of Stella at his wedding two weeks ago. It was ok... I'm more of a dark ale kinda guy. Like Smithwicks?

Widmer Brothers Drop Top Amber Ale. Nothing better. Although MacTarnahan's Black Watch Cream Porter is very nice.

I love Australia but I have to say they cannot brew beer to save their life. Luckily you can get draught Guiness here in most decent pubs, and I recently discovered the Belgian beer Cafe. Now for those of you who dont know; Belgian beer is univerally acknowledged as the best beers in the world. The Belgian beer Cafes, scattered around Australia, have this stuff on draught, as well as bottles. I have even seen Leffe Brune in Bottle Shops. For some idea on choice heres the link to the Sydney Belgian Beer Cafe beer menu I dont know which is my favourite , I havent tried them all yet Although I may book for the beer tasting night  Fortunately for you TonyTooTimes theres one in Brissy too!

Is this where I confuse some people....
In the American sence of the word beer - lager - can't stand it. Then there's bitter, not too keen on that either.
Cider - love it!!! It's the best thing over the summer. The local has some Swedish stuff, my fav one at the mo has Summer Fruits added to it.....far too drinkable.
Opened a nice bottle of Perry last night.
But decent cider is not available everywhere.
So
My "any time any place" drink has to be Guinness.... I've had some bad pints in my time - mainly where they don't know how to look after it. But for every bad pint theres 15 or more good ones!

Over the years I've sampled a lot of beers. There are some really nie ones out there but I always come back to GUINNESS.

I have takin on the responsability to judge KCBS BBQ contests and have one in Sept. that after the BBQ contest they are having a brew contest. 70 micro breweries from the US and Intl. And the BBQ judges get in free!!

T³, You know whay they call it XXXX? Cause they can't spell beer in Queensland. Ok, really bad and old joke eh? Anyway, the very best beers in the world reside in my fridge in the beer room downstairs. Oh yeah, I made them all myself too.

That is what I say about most Amnerican beers, Coors, Bud, Miller etc. I haven't found a Mexican beer that I like yet either.
Some of the best beer I ever had was when I was in Australia (Freemantle, Perth then went down to Tazmania), but they were all in Brew Pubs. There were a couple I remember well, one was called Wheat Back and another I have long since forgotten the name was as red as cherry cream soda and it was very good.

The Golden beers (larger). Cats Pee i call it. Pour it straight down the toilet and cut out the middle man i say.
As a mere snippet of a boy when i first started drinking in pubs (i was 16) it was always Carling Black Label with a squirt of blackcurrent. Then some "Real Ale' drinking biker buddies of mine educated me to the fact that Golden beer, aka Larger, is in fact a boys drink, and real men drink Real Ale.
Been drinking the dark stuff eversince. Favorites, well Free comes top of the list. Followed closely by Fullers London Pride, Fuller ESB, (both often available at Flying Saucer pubs). I mostly like the British ales, but will always try local micro brewery ales. And if i cant find a nice dark ale, then there is always the old standbye, Guiness.

This is sort of a sore subject for me... I found out in Feb that I can no longer drink beer due to my having celiacs disease. So Strongbow quickly became my beer of choice. Before that Bell's Amber Ale, Bell's Oberon, New Belgium's Fat Tire, Shiner Bock, and Tecate were the favorites.

Yes, it is legal. There was a place in Oregon or Washington that I used to order beer from quite a bit... Can't remember the name right now but that doesn't matter anyway...

DO NOT!!! That is a federal offense and is stricty enforced.
The ATF will be all over you very quickly.
Use UPS. They are the only ones that will "let you get away with it", just label the contents as "yeast samples". This is the way we ship brews around the country and to homebrew contests. The Sam Adams Homebrew contest they are having now also tells you in the rules to only use UPS, do not use FedEx either.
I am not sure why the laws are like that, probably cause the USPS is run by the gubermint and UPS is private. FedEx just refuses and won't do it on principles, I beleive the big wigs at FedEx are all Mormons too, which would explain their stance on this issue.

If you are going to be judging a BBQ contest, please read these words of advise. OK, so its not BBQ but Chilli but its funny anyway.
If you can read this whole story without tears of laugher running down your cheeks then there's no hope for you!
*Note: Please take time to read this slowly. If you pay attention to the first two judges, the reaction of the third judge is even better!
For those of you who have lived in Texas, you know how true this is. They actually have a Chili Cook-off about the time the Rodeo comes to town. It takes up a major portion of the parking lot at the Astrodome. The notes are from an inexperienced Chili taster named Frank, who was visiting Texas from the East Coast:
Frank: "Recently, I was honored to be selected as a judge at a chili cook-off. The original person called in sick at the last moment and I happened to be standing there at the judge's table asking for directions to the Budweiser truck, when the call came in. I was assured by the other two judges (Native Texans) that the chili wouldn't be all that spicy and, besides,
they told me I could have free beer during the tasting, so accepted".
Here are the scorecards from the event:

Judge # 1 -- Excellent firehouse chili. Great kick. Needs more beans.

Judge # 3 -- I felt something scraping across my tongue, but was unable to taste it. Is it possible to burn out taste buds? Sally, the barmaid, was standing behind me with fresh refills. That 300-lb. *censored* is starting to look HOT...just like this nuclear waste I'm eating! Is chili an aphrodisiac?

Chili # 5 Linda's Legal Lip Remover
Judge # 1 -- Meaty, strong chili. Cayenne peppers freshly ground, adding considerable kick. Very impressive.
Judge # 2 -- Chili using shredded beef, could use more tomato. Must admit the cayenne peppers make a strong statement.
Judge # 3 -- My ears are ringing, sweat is pouring off my forehead and I can no longer focus my eyes. I farted and four people behind me needed paramedics. The contestant seemed offended when I told her that her chili had given me brain damage. Sally saved my tongue from bleeding by pouring beer directly on it from the pitcher. I wonder if I'm burning my lips off. It really pisses me off that the other judges asked me to stop screaming. Screw those rednecks.

Judge # 1 -- Thin yet bold vegetarian variety chili. Good balance of spices and peppers.
Judge # 2 -- The best yet. Aggressive use of peppers, onions, and garlic. Superb.

I shat myself when I farted and I'm worried it will eat through the chair. No one seems inclined to stand behind me except that slut Sally. She must be kinkier than I thought.

Judge # 1 -- A mediocre chili with too much reliance on canned peppers.
Judge # 2 -- Ho hum, tastes as if the chef literally threw in a can of chili peppers at the last moment. I should take note that I am worried about Judge #3. He appears to be in a bit of distress as he is cursing uncontrollably.

Chili # 8 Tommy's Toe-Nail Curling Chili
Judge # 1 -- The perfect ending, this is a nice blend chili. Not too bold but spicy enough to declare its existence.
Judge # 2 -- This final entry is a good, balanced chili. Neither mild nor hot. Sorry to see that most of it was lost when Judge # 3 passed out, fell over and pulled the chili pot down on top of himself. Not sure if he's going to make it. Poor dude, wonder how he'd have reacted to really hot chili.

Wasn't meaning to flame ya, just wanted to note that it can be done, but only with UPS, which technically is not "the mail".
No harm, no foul. I used to belong to the Belgium Brewing Club and got a 12 pack every month of new Belgium beers, They always came UPS with signature required. They were even clearly labeled as beer too. They used to just leave them on my front porch anyway. MMM they were tasty, but at $50/month they were not that good. I can buy zillions of beers at Beers Of The World nearby anyway.

The other day, whilst out to dinner with the family, my eldest daughter orders me up a 'Blue Moon' with a hunk/wedge/piece/chunk (?) of an orange in it. Never heard of Blue Moon and although I'd had Mex. swill with lime, I'd never heard of drowning a perfectly good orange in a mug-o-beer. I'm no beer freak, but it seems to me that if you gotta change the flavor with fruit, there's something awry with the product. So, for us less worldly - What's the deal with the fruit stuff?

The laws vary by state...NH just recently started to allow wine shipments direct to consumers from Vitners in different states...but be sure to read the fine print...Vitners have a federal license to MFG and SHIP you may not be granted the same privlage...also Vitners can clearly label their shipments and thereby hope that they recieve the proper care..IE...not left sitting on some loading dock in the hot sun...or roasting in some truck on its way across country...so its not just the shipping side you need to worry about BUT ALSO the recieving side...It was perfectly legal for Mondavi to ship a case of wine...but it was illegal for me to recieve it and so illegal for them to ship TO ME...untill they changed to law...and even then it's still subject to ATF regulations...very tricky! Either way US mail is still (I think) a deff NO-NO! Has to be private carrier...UPS, FED-EX, DHL, ect...

TonyTwoTimes, Oh we've had beer threads, right guys? I'm suprised Adey hasn't been along to sing the praises of Owd Rodger, but then beer wasn't part of the diet he was on, so maybe he's just crying into a Jaffa Cake he can't eat while reading this thread. Looks like Gina might be off the Magners Cider, because that's what she said in the past. Me...I'm not a huge beer drinker. Might have a Fat Tire Amber Ale, and I drank a Deschuttes Black Butte Porter the other day. But often my taste in beer varies upon the season. Pale Ales in the summer and Oatmeal Stouts in the winter. I've also been known to throw back some good Bourbon when there's a nip in the air, but where I live it's pretty warm. I always have some Elijah Craig 12 yr old on hand, and I'll drink the 18 yr old stuff when I go to Big Nose Kate's in Tombstone because I can't find it locally. Evan Williams Single Barrell is also a good one that fits my budget. Wild Turkey Rare Breed is another favoite, but slightly more expensive. I wish I lived in a good state to get Bourbon, but maybe it's better I don't. I have enough hobbies.

Excuse my ignorance. Never have known the difference between Scotch and Bourbon. I am trying (though very slowely) to get a Whiskey collection going in my drink cabinet. Currently i have three bottles. A 15 year old Glenmorangie, Jack Daniels Belgium Medal Award edition (bottle is signed by JD's master brewer) and a bottle of Crown Royal Special Reserve. Most nights i like to finish the evening off with a glass.
I know three bottle does not make a collection, but small steps as they say.

Larry was right, this's gonna start a fight!!!!! The CZECHS and their German cousins are the best beer brewers! Belgians, hah, just northern Frenchmen with no eye for brewing!!!
Ok, in all fairness, I'm being fascetious here, I do prefer Czech/German as I say, but I do like some Belgians too.
And of course the usual Pub stuff like Guinness, Murphy's etc...

The big difference between Bourbon and Scotch is the mash and the barrells. Bourbon is strictly regulated as to how it's made and even what barrells they can use. All bourbon mash must be at least 51% corn and has to be aged 2 years. It also has has to be put into new freshly charred white oak barrels. Many used bourbon barrels are sold to Scotch and Tequila makers. They also can't add anything to make it sweeter, enhance flavor, or change the color. It really is a naturally pure spirit, which is why I like it. Btw, it isn't bourbon unless it says so on the bottle. You live in a good part of the country for getting up a collection of fine bourbon, although you might have to venture into Kentucky to get some of the rare stuff. If you want to get into some bourbon, I recommend Straightbourbon.com.

Gina, By the way, I also make ciders, meads and wine. Apples are grown all over in this part of the country and there are cider mills aplenty. I buy 5 gallons of fresh cider, toss in some champaign yeast and nector is just a few weeks away. But it is so smooth and goes down too fast and at 15%, it will hurt you quickly.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

Excuse my ignorance. Never have known the difference between Scotch and Bourbon. I am trying (though very slowely) to get a Whiskey collection going in my drink cabinet. Currently i have three bottles. A 15 year old Glenmorangie, Jack Daniels Belgium Medal Award edition (bottle is signed by JD's master brewer) and a bottle of Crown Royal Special Reserve. Most nights i like to finish the evening off with a glass.
I know three bottle does not make a collection, but small steps as they say.
Drink the Glenmorangie bin the rest and find yourself a bottle of Highland Park for a malt or Te Beag (pronounced She vague) for a blend.
The rest are pale imatations IMHO

"Must not contain any added substance other than water and caramel colour" It's sad when a spirit maker has to add color to his product, but I guess when you're dealing with an inferior drink like Scotch instead of Bourbon, you have to give it some help.
