Don't know what you guys think about the rear peg hangers but personally I think they are just plain sad... now if they really WERE tool boxes that would be a different story. Anyway, I got a spare set from a member here (thanks Lee) and wanted to try my hand at a little custom work. After coming up with what I thought was a cool drawing I stripped off the grey powder coating, ground off the ridges then made up a router jig from a piece of plexi and went to town on it with a dremel and a zip bit. I have them both done now and need to clean them up a little bit more with some filing and sanding and then I'm going to try my hand at polishing them up. I don't think they are that nice to warrant the expense of a chrome job but I'm pretty happy with them for my first go anyway at metal fab kinda stuff. So what you guys think? Da bomb or weak?....lol

Nice symmetry and cool pattern. You also didn't lose any integrity on the pieces.
I am impressed.

Great job. You did a nice job of keeping everything symmetrical and have an eye catching design.
Oh and I do think they are worth chroming. Polishing won't make them look as good.

You're right, they are downright butt ugly. You best send them over to me so I can dispose of them for you. I know you would not want to be seen with them ugly things on your bike. I'll take the bullet for ya bro!

I think they look really cool Steve and worthy of a chromium plating, see what they look like after you polish them and decide.
I have a spare set, would not of thought about doing that though. Impressed!

Man you guys are way too kind!! Thank you much for all the kind words. I wasn't too sure about them but as the wife explained to me "you're too much of a perfectionist." She is prolly right, most times my expectations exceeds my talents and well you know, hehe. Pat you are a man of true character and honor. I appreciate your willingness to put yourself on the line like that but I just couldn't live with myself putting you in harms way like that...lol As far as chroming them, I dunno, I guess I was thinking they might be a bit too amateurish (is that a word?) to take them into a chroming place. Figured they would snicker and I would have to make up some story about how my nephew made them in shop class or something and I was obligated to use them, hehehe Think I will take your advice Ray and give them a real good polishing and see how they look before I go the chrome route. Again, thanks everybody and I will get some pics up once they are totally finished and installed on the bike.

Yup, I'm with the majority on this one too. I think they look sweet and you would be doing them and your good idea an injustice by not chroming them!

glazer,
Hey, not bad. Not bad at all. It appears you may have done the impossible. That being...turning a pig's ear into a silk purse. I agree with you about the stock hangers. Took 'em off years ago and have the passenger pegs doing double-duty as the muffler hanger bolts.(same thread-pattern and bolt size, ya know)
Cheers, Dwight

Thanks again all, Joker I gotta tell you.... I hate to tell people no about anything but I just wouldn't be comfortable hackin' on somebody else's parts. For one thing I don't feel I'm that good and secondly what happens if I mess them up? Even if you or anybody else was to say "no prob" I would feel awful and owe ya a replacement set. I figured since I got these for next to nothing what the heck. So even if you have a spare set it's extremely labor intensive as you couldn't get much cruder than what I did, basically grind away with a dremel till you get what you want. I know if somebody out there has access to a cnc machine this would be a total piece of cake. Tell ya what though, if you or anybody else has the ambition I could send you the jig and a helpful hint tutorial. As far as Brent goes, Brent you listening?, I have no idea what is proper protocol for copying something else but if you wanna do it Brent have at it buddy. Either the actual idea of it or the design itself is open to you if you would like to produce them. I guess if you make a million dollars doing it you could sent me a clutch cover kit or something, hehehehe, as a sign of appreciation for the yacht, summer homes, fast women, ect., ect., that comes with the wealth. (or not, lol )

glazer, Last Sept., I also thought those peg hangers were ugly. Although my approach was more toward color-coding my yellow Speedy (and not as elaborate as your idea), I think we both saw that those peghangers need help (see pics below). -BT

glazer,
Ya know, another cool idea would be to get a really nice medallion, - maybe something like a commemorative "Route 66" medallion, and inset the thing in a perfectly smoothed-out & powdercoated peghanger.
You have to find a end-mill the same diameter as the medallion.

Hey BT, Yeah, I had seen your peg hangers, I didn't know though that you had actually cut anything out of them. What did you use to cut them with? Anything better than a RotoZip bit? Gotta be something better I would think. I have a friend that said I could use her plasma cutter anytime I wanted but she is not sure how it would work on aluminium. Actually I wished Triumph hadn't cheesed out and made actual tool boxes out of them instead of the faux thing then I wouldn't have felt compelled to "help" them, hehe. The medallion thing is a good idea too. I had thought about giving that a try as I found some cool Triumph belt buckles on Ebay that I thought would be great for that. I wasn't sure how they would weather though but I guess you could have them clear powdercoated as extra protection. Anyway if any of this provides more inspiration to people to try and customize them I think that would be great. I love seeing what people come up with.

glazer, I cut those channels out with an Enco Milling machine (I have a small machine shop). The pic below shows a lathe & milling machine similar to mine. Equipment is not my problem, - figuring out how to use them is where the challenge is. -BT

Glazer, Daaang. Those are so purdy that you could bolt them up as is! Chrome would be sweet. So would a color of powdercoat that picks up on another color you have already. Have you considered anodizing them? Ron Newman's site looks a lot like Pat's home brew site!

Nice MO'chines there BT! Man, I could have some fun with those, soon as I got my fingers sewed back on, hehe. Thanks Moe, did think about anodizing or even a candy powdercoat over a polish but I don't have any other colors on the bike, just black. Not sure what would look good.... Not sure if I was still happy or not with them I decided to put a down a dirty polish on them. They look great a few feet away but up close you can still see grinding/sanding marks. Anyway, bolted them on to see how they would look... verdict is, I am pleased! And so you all know, (drumroll) I am gonna chrome them for sure now. Till I track someplace down here to do them I will leave them on but thought maybe you guys would like to see them installed.

Hey glazer, They look even better on the bike! Here's a tip for searching for a chromer. Use http://local.google.com and put your town and state in. It will find locally whatever you search for! Very cool...

Hey chopperrick.. personally I'm not into skulls on my bikes (flames're great tho) but I gotta say that's ****** impressive. Can you tell me how thick the steel you used is, and how stable it is against flexing underfoot?

WATER JET?!?!?! HA!, what a poosey! It ain't fabricating unless you spend at least a day per side with a dremel and a mini grinder. Seriously though, that's pretty sweet Rick. Little bit hard to tell but it would appear that they pretty much stay within the size/outline of the original hangers, yes? One addition to the shop I didn't have last time is a plasma cutter..... I haven't tried it yet on the peg hangers but wondering if it cuts through cast aluminium alright or if it's gonna be a problem.... anyone?
