i have read but cannot find that some of you guys added a vacum line to the carbs, do you connect the line from one carb to the other, and what does this do for the bike?

Yup you got it. And it smooths out the idle.

But wait...the plugs on the carbs or the plugs on the manifolds?

Either one, I did it on the carb side.

Just an FYI... I did mine out of necessity when I was up in Vermont and a vacuum cap let go. The local autoparts store (where I worked as a kid) didn't have any small vacuum caps, so he gave me 6 inches of hose to connect them and I pocketed my spare cap. Always a good idea to have spares

The manifold is probably best. You have to remove the hose to balance the carbs and the manifold fittings are a little easier to reach. You just pop the hose off and connect the balancing guage.

So the main purpose for doing this is to smooth out the idle, nothing else?

I did this with my old AI hose and it had a pulsating whistle sound as it ran. Real annoying. Took the hose off and blew through it and out came the same sound. So I used another black hose and now it has a pulsating sucking sound to it [shwt, shwt, shwt]. While the bike is running I can pinch the hose between my fingers and the noise goes away. What's with that. Is this normal?

Probably normal. With the hose in place, both cylinders pull from both carbs. This balances out the mixture and that is why the bike idles nicer.

The AI hose has a small brass restrictor in the line. You have to remove that. Squeeze the hose and you will find a tough spot. Thats it, work it out and whala you have a hose. The AI hose is good for draining the carb bowls also.

I fitted a hose connecting the manifolds and a hose connecting the carbs. This helped my idling problems after i fitted a 790cc Boney Exhaust cam to my Thruxton.

Cheers........Agro
