This got me thinking about my own mortality. Biker killed. I live less than a mile from this intersection, travel this road everyday. Bob

I roll down a rode on my commute every day that has a sweeping blind "S" curve of which Northbound traffic tends to misjudge in terms of how fast it can be taken.
Over the years I have ridden/drove past accidents that occured in the afternoon there that produced numerous casualties.
Needless to say this tempers my inclination to take this curve with any degree of abandon. I usually just slow way down and keep to the extreme outside edge when going either direction.
I get this picture of a dead biker laying unattended on the edge of the road while paramedics work on his partner. This mental snapshot easily overcomes a desire to take this curve with a challenging attitude.
I am over 50 so I no longer have any naivete as to my own mortality.
Its amazing how your average 18 year old does not. Sadly, more of them would survive accidents if they had a better sense of their own "mortality"
Lots of wannabe evel knievals amongst each new generation of teens.

Hey Bob I think about this sorta stuff very often while riding. Lot's of what "if's". Sometimes after going a little too quick on open roads  . I totalled my first bike after having a cab pull out in front of me (got myself a free ride in an ambulance!) and it does make you think sometimes. You're not on your own in your thinking. When my ex used to nag me, I had a stock answer "hey, you've gotta die of something" ... usually shut her up (for 5 minutes anyway )

That is part of being 18. I think almost all of us were that way at that age. I certainly was well into my 20’s. Not until a few of my friends and acquaintances had bought the farm did I imagine it could happen to me. The old saying was “There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but very few old bold pilots.†That certainly applies to motorcycle riders as well.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Speaking of an 18 year old, the other day I was in an Albertson's Food Store parking lot when a kid on a sportbike did a wheelie and sped around the lot. I had seen his bike before and thought he was an employee of Albertson's. I called the store later, and told them I love bikes and riding, but this kid could have killed someone. They told me they would have a serious talk with him. I have not seen his bike in the lot since. Hope he learned a lesson.
