Just purchased a 2005 America (green) with 650 miles. Sold a H-D softail because it was a hog and I think I made the right decision. Previous owner of the Triumph installed D&D Megaphone Esxhaust, 125 main jets and pilot jets. This bike screams but I am not familiar enough to know if the sounds I'm hearing when I let off on the throttle (blub, blub, blub, blub...) is normal and not damaging engine. I use to have a 66 FORD Pickup that made the same sounds but exhaust manifold was loose from engine... Any info. would be appreciated.

First off, welcome and good choice in bikes!! Did he remove the AI (air injection)? This will cause a popping on deceleration. Also, if you are running a little lean, you can also get a little popping. The mixture screw can be turned out to help with this. About 3 turns usually, then incremental 1/4 turns. You would need a D tool for this, which can be found at http://www.newspeedmaster.com/html/d_tool.html. Use Dinqua's site http://www.dinqua.com/Triumph/carbs0.html for help locating te mixture screw. Good luck and welcome aboard!

Oh man!! I'm going to jail!!

G'day mate, great choice of bike. I looked at bying a H-D Softail before getting my Triumph BA, but am now super glad I opted for the triumph and (bonus) saved a heap of money! you will no doubt love it also...

Now with the D&D's (I have them on my bike) you will need 130 mains and approx 3-1/4 turns out on the pilot screw. If you remove the snorkel on top of the airbox (another easy mod) use 133 mains instead. The air-injection should already be removed because the D&D pipes come with the removal kit.

Again as LimeyD said, have a good look around this site to find many more idea's on what can be done to these bikes to make them better for minimal cost....but if you want to use the spare change from your Hog you will have one sweet machine!

Thanks for the input. I'm taking the bike to the dealer saturday and will ask them to back off the mixture screw 3 1/4 turns. I'm confused. I believe the D7D exhaust came with 125 mains is this sufficient or do I need to install 130 mains. I get the feeliing this is not a pure science. Again thanks for your help.

If your taking it to the dealer to get them to set your mixture screws, you may as well get them to set up your jets.

As you said, this is not a pure science because every bike is different (pipes, parts etc.) and they are also from different locations (sea level or up in the mountains) which will determine different jet size.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted...

Had the pilot screw backed out 3 1/4 turn. What a difference! Dealer advised me not to mess with the airbox. I see no need at this point. Odd thing, throttle is racing when I turn hard right. It didn't before shop worked on bike. The cables are being bound with hard right turn and accelerating throttle. I can't seem to find enough slack to resolve problem. Looks like another trip to dealer.

You should be able to adjust the cable on the right bar just above the kill switch. There are two cables coming out that have plastic adjustment screws on them. It has been awhile since I messed with them but trial and error method should work. If I remember one is for the slack when giving gas and one is for tension.
Good luck

Recently installed D&D exhausts. Removed AI system, installed UNI air filter. No jet changes yet because she is running fine. I run at or below sea level in florida and the stock jets seem OK. Decelerates with a smooth roar and no popping or burbling. installed new plugs, will read them after 100 miles to fine tune carbs.

Try just loosening then retightening the throttle side assembly on the bars.

A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice. Pat

I had the same thing with my 05 America: Hard right turn and the engine races. The problem is the fool throttle cables aren't long enough. Rather than replace the cables though, I just rerouted them to the right side of the frame and that fixed it. Now, I've got whole bunches and bunches of slack.

If you go this route, you have to disconnect the throttle cables from the carbs, which is somewhat of a bother, especially if you reconnect them backwards.
