It's that whole hysterical paranoia thing. You gotta be a right winger to understand .
(Or know the kind, anyway )
But I'm half right-winger! (fiscally) I suppose you gotta be 100% to understand. I've never been a fan of conspiracy theories. I prefer Ockham's razor.
Well, I have some conservative tenancies myself. That's the real definition of a "moderate", or "centrist". Fence straddler is wholly inaccurate in the description as most of us have very strong opinions, some liberal, and some conservative. The hysterical paranoids have roots in the fringes of both major parties, but have been predominate in the right wing lately. For perfect examples of the aberrant paranoid psychosis, just read Kevin's posts on this thread.
And I agree about the conspiracy theory thing. The simplest answer is usually right. Therefore I’ve determined that all of the various conspiracy theories are just red herrings to keep us from the truth.

Blah blah blah blah blah. Whiners in the back seat!
People who dont live here, cant vote here and should give a cr&p one way or the other. Liberal "Globalists"
And liberal Americans who still cant get over the fact that they lost and try to put the greater good of the country in front of their irrational hatred of George Bush.
funny how Europeans think they know better than the American voters who is best for US!
I guess I DO need to be reminded that the Golden Age of Greece occurred some thousands of years ago.
I think his name was Alexander. He was GREAT even if he was a switch hitter.
I bet ole Alex would give the ragheads some serious pause in this day and age. Another "Guagemela" might work real good in the greater middle east. Alexander was not that big on being politcally correct when it comes to wielding the sword.
But wait he was a "king" He was not elected. Novel idea.
Yea ,he went through Messopotamia a while back. A long while back.
George Dubya could learn a few things from Alexander the Great. eh?
But.
Not much since though in the way of lEADING anything one way or the other from Greece or the rest of Europe save England.

All the whiners and crying aside. At least ole George is working HARD. "Were Working Hard"
His predecessor worked hard too. He annointed the oval office in a way that is most novel. The world went on around him while he spent his bodily fluids on the garments of whomever would crawl under the desk. Its a big desk.
We'll take George. Thank you Bed and Bayern

You liberals out there wherever you are just need to remember to ....
Clan,
I am hoping you don't really want me to respond to something like THAT.
You are obviously not reading or understanding what I have been saying (and I was told just recently that my English is above average).

I think that Bedouin has asked honest questions and expressed honest opinions and doubts that need to be treated in an open and honorable manner. Some other members have acted in a somewhat less honest manner and have instead regurgitated leftist nonsense that probably started as talking points from Howard Dean and Moveon.org. An honest disagreement is the start of a healthy and enlightening debate from which all parties can emerge better than they started. A clash of cant and talking points is just a waste of time. I have some good friends that are liberals, in the old sense. Hubert Humphrey, George Meany type of liberals who, like me, believe in American exceptionalism and the honest, if spirited, exchange of ideas and philosophies. We fight and argue all the time, but we also give each other the benefit of the doubt.
A certain amount of leniency and goodwill toward your domestic political opponents is required to make democracy work in the long run. We must assume that our domestic political opponents also believe in our system unless they prove otherwise. We hope that our political adversaries make that same assumption. Recently that goodwill has broken down. Some parts of Americas political system have gone off the deep end. No longer believing in the basic goodwill of their opponents, they are willing to say and believe that even the most rabid enemies of democracy, Western civilization, and America are no worse than members of an opposing political party.
Mel Gibson is a piker compared to some political partisans. As soon as he sobered up Mel realized how outrageous and disgusting his remarks had been. Some bloggers and political operatives need to come to the same realization.
I think that conservatives need to take the high road in this debate. We need to avoid making ad hominum attacks on the opposition and zero in on the absurdity of their policies and the probable outcomes of following their policies. The more rabid and shrill our opponents are, the fewer people they will convince and fewer votes they will receive.
On the other hand, we need to treat honest questions and criticism with respect. There will always be those who honestly disagree, question or just don’t see things the way we do. They should be treated the way we would want to be treated in their place.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

My little joke about the name America being dropped by Triumph was just that...a joke. It was intended to be along the same lines as the running jokes we have around here about Speedmasters being faster than Americas, or which color bike is the fastest.
If I would've known it was going to create this thread, I wouldn't have done it. It pains me to see some of the insults thrown around in this thread. We're supposed to be here for the comraderie and the bikes, not to pound on each other. So lighten up guys.

Martlet, if you are serving then good job, and I don't include those who are or have served in Iraq in that "us" (such as JCBullen). This was aimed squarely at those on the board who would intone that by being staunch Republicans they should automatically be included in the same breath with those who are or were serving in the current conflict. I did my time in the Service as well, but I would never take it upon myself to say that I'm out there defending freedom (as our troops are doing), as the poster Kevin posted appears to do. I am just SICK & TIRED of the opinion around here (as well as by the likes of Coulter or Hannity on FOX), that if you don't like Bush or believe he is doing the right thing, that in the same breath you are traiterous, unpatriotic, or aiding and abetting Al-Queda! If I were truly so unpatriotic, I would not have gladly given 6 years of my life to the Navy, nor would have I supported our going into Afghanistan without reserve (a mission I still believe 100% in, although I think we've allowed Iraq to divert our attention from building up a stable democratic government in that country, or bringing Bin Laden to justice, 5 years on, not to mention hamstringing our ability to confront Iran and N. Korea). I love this country, warts and all, and I just don't believe that supporting a politician or party goes hand in hand with being Patriotic, and if I recall, several of our forefathers warned us extensively against those who seem overly patriotic!

There's nothing wrong with being patriotic. I'm not sure what you mean by "overly patriotic".
You don't have to agree with everything this administration does, either. I don't think anyone (who actually follows politics) can honestly say they believe in every decision made by a President. I also don't think most people believe that disagreeing with the President on Iraq means you are unpatriotic. I think it's what you do with those beliefs that matters. I'll elaborate.
If you don't agree with the reasons for the war, that's fine. If you protest the war, that's fine. If you protest carrying a sign that likens Bush to Hitler or call soldiers terrorists, that's pretty over the top. If you protest with people who are carrying that sign you're grouping yourself in with that crowd. The enemy of my enemy isn't always my friend. If you constantly look for news, or slant existing news, to shine a bad light on our accomplishments there, that's over the top.
If you're over the top, you're coming close to presenting yourself as unpatriotic. If you're way over the top, you're already there.
That's the reason liberals get labeled as unpatriotic so often. They all aren't. The vast majority of them aren't. However, they allow the vocal minority to stand under their umbrella. Since that nutjob minority is the loudest, that's the image the party portrays.
You could turn that around, change liberal to conservative, and make the same argument. It's just not as extreme right now because the lightening rod just happens to be a Republican.

Come on SalMaglie. This is the most entertaining thread going right now. Don't beat yourself up. I've been enjoying it.
I realized something after the last thread like this. When someone sits way, way out there on the extreme right, EVERYONE looks like a lefty to them. Hahahahahaha

I honestly don't see what's so enjoyable about all of this, and that's one of the reasons I stay out of these threads. Nobody is going to change their mind or change their vote. So what's the point? To me it's just a a bunch of verbal masturbation. But if y'all are havin' fun, knock yourselves out.

I like this thread because it comes from such a wide cross section of people. The common denominator is that we all like Triumph motorcycles, and even there we have a lot of debate: custom vs. stock, helmet vs none, Speedmaster vs. America, black vs. red, etc. (Up near Winnipeg they put vinegar on their fries, I prefer ketchup, Kerry or not.) I probably lean a little to the left and I really don't see anything wrong with that. I see it as the left brings on the change, which we all need sometimes, and the right tries to preserve the status quo. What I really try to do is take a moderate approach, because I really feel that the middle is where things get done. I really have been trying to listen to the righties arguements but I'm just not getting much. ladisney tried to make some logical points, those points were that the dems should refrain from disrespectful arguments. Does anyone remember Swiftboat? cosmo enumerated some generalizations about Democratic leaders being corrupt lawyers, but for every one of his points I was thinking of a parallel Republican example. Then there are the arguements that are so outrageous that they are just beyond any kind of credibility. Nobody had a valid rebuttal to Cat's article, except to say there were too many points to argue. Doesn't that say something right there? Let's throw out he preposterous entertainers like Micheal Moore and Ann Coulter and get down to business. Bedouin makes the most thoughtful arguments, IMO, and he isn't even from this country! Come on guys, give me something here. I really am listening.

Martlet, thanks for the reasonable and measured response. And I agree with you 100%. I actually would label myself a centrist, because I lean to the left on certain issues and the right on just as many, but I don't lean to the extreme on many if any. I would suspect that few if any liberals are truly unpatriotic, maybe severely misguided, but not unpatriotic. If they actually make an effort to aide and abet the enemy, then they've crossed that line. As to being "overly-patriotic", let me clarify. I see many people down here around where I live who go way over the top sometimes professing their Christianity, but then turn around and act in the most un-Christian way (my wife could give you ENDLESS examples of this from waiting on Church crowds at her restaurant on Sunday mornings!), and the same way. I tend to be VERY suspect of someone who professes their belief too much, as being either extremist, or being a fake. I've seen a studying minister here where I work profess their love for the US and God in a very vocal way, but then turn around and say that America deserved 9/11 because we tolerate certain people or lifestyles that his interpretation of the Bible conflicts with. To me, to say that you love something, and then say that what you love deserves destruction just doesn't jibe well. Hopefully you see where I'm coming from now. Like I said, I supported us going into Afghanistan due to the clear links to Al Queda and the Taliban, but not Iraq due to the non-existence of links, and even more so now that I've seen how it has crippled our ability to threaten (and thus provide a counterbalance to) countries like Iran, who truly DOES need to be reigned in.

Unfortunately, I can't say whether it was the right decision to go into Iraq at the time. It really depends on who you believe this administration knew at the time. Sadly, that belief is usually based on your politics, not the other way around as it should be.
If you believe Bush looked at the information he provided and determined Iraq was a threat, then to me his actions were justified. I believe that. Why? Because most of the world believed Saddam had WMD, we knew for a fact he was supporting terrorists, and we knew he desired harm to come to the US. Therefore the logical extension of that that information takes us to Iraq being a threat.
If you believe Bush trumped up the information to justify an attack on Iraq, then you obviously don't think it was justified. If that's the case, someone had better start impeachment proceedings.
What someone believes now isn't as relevant to the discussion. Now we have hindsight. It's easy to say what you would have done then if you knew what you know now.
I liken our invasion of Iraq to a search warrant. Then again, I'm somewhat of an isolationist. I think we had probable cause to go in and search. However, once we determined there was no cause, every last boot should have left the ground. We aren't nation builders. At least we shouldn't be.

We're PO'ing a lot of people in the world, and we are spending a ton of money to do it, money that could be spent on other things. But I don't think that has influenced Bloor in his marketing.
One thing that influenced me to buy my Triumph was that the Brits were standing with us. That was 2003 when we first invaded Iraq. I still think the Brits are good friends and I'm proud to ride a British bike. I like the fact that Truimphs have names like Bonneville and America.
I'd like to see some changes in our policies. I'd like to see the Lebanese and the Iranians and the Syrians riding Americas and Bonnevilles...and Harleys, and Victories and KTMs. I don't think bombs are going to get us there, not totally. I think dialog and negotiation and trade and education will get us there. Sure we need to keep our guard up. We need to strike them back when they strike us. And we need to talk, which we haven't been doing.
