As a recovering Liberal, a former Democrat (now Republican) and one who knows a few higher-ups in our state Democratic Party, I can tell you what is going on here.
Most of the leaders of the Democratic party are trial lawyers. Typically, trial lawyers do not care about the innocense of their client (the Democratic Party in this case), only that they get acquited. To do this they employ this tactic:
1) acknowledge and promote only the 'facts' that lead to your clients acquital - in other words, make your side look really logical.
2) discredit the other side by making him (the Republicans) look very illogical by using ad hominum attacks to demonize him.
3) never allow facts that might criminalize your client to arise.
4) when accused of using this legal tactic, accuse the other side of using it first.
Never do you let an honest discussion take place, nor do you ever consider facts that might look good for your opponent. In this way you gain the unwavering allegiance of the jury (Jonathan). All political leaders should be open to criticism, our nation depends on it, but the assaults by the Democrats have not added to the discussion, they only emotionalize it.
