Interestingly enough I don't really have a problem with the motorcycles themselves. Sure they have their problems but what brand doesn't? And I think the company management and marketing is brilliant.
It's the posers who spend their kid's college fund, tap their 401k or mortgage their house because they think they need to "buy cool," like a Harley is the missing piece of their personal "cool puzzle." But then start flipping sh!t to anyone not on a Harley, regardless of how long they've been riding or what. Granted not all Harley riders are like this but a significant percentage are (and I'm not talking about the guys who are just kidding around, like the guys I know - I'm talking about the ones who really believe this stuff and "drink the Kool-Aid").
And now we have people like this who are buying $40k+ pieces of arse-jewelry from companies like Iron Horse and Big Dog. These guys are so superior and aloof that they don't even bother to insult us. This is the truest meaning of the phrase, "Buying a lifestyle." (Just to tie it back in to the title of this thread.) I'd like to see most of these jackholes try and take those bikes out of town. The reason they have to stop at every bar is not to have a drink but to rest their behinds...

Well im very satisfied with my Softail Deluxe so far,Ya I understand the HD crowd can be a real pain, but for the most part the ones I meet seem to be good folks.I just hate the guys dressed up in all that HD crap and never seem to wanna speak to anyone. So far my Thunderbird Sport is working out great,I never knew how sweet a triple can be! Fun fun! I will never be without a Triumph again period!Just wishing for fall to get here and start riding those back rodes again....

I agree that H-D's ads are brilliant. The one with a baby in a Harley shirt on a Harley comforter that said, "When did it start for you?" was genius. But the Triumph ad with the neglected blonde that said, "If it was another woman at least I could compete." was even better.

It was kind of funny when we were out a couple of weeks ago Donny. You had a Harley shirt riding your Triumph T-bird sport, I had a Triumph sticker on my helmet riding your Harley Softail and Blast had Triumph gear riding all three bikes. I just saw 3 guys who liked riding, that's what it's all about not being a snob to those who don't ride what you do.

I was there....caught up in the HD hype for 15 years. I finally got sick of it. I didn't want to ride feeling like I had to look a certain way. I just wanted to enjoy riding for me. Left it behind and never looked back.

I wasn't really referring to the wit of HD ads. Obviously there are other ads that are better written and/or designed. But no one can argue with the success of their marketing. Somehow they've managed to intertwine their brand with the good ol' U.S. of A., Mom and apple pie, and make their traditionally rebel/hoodlum spirit (much of which has been drained from the brand) acceptable in the mainstream. Bloody brilliant. About the only thing I think they did wrong, besides selling their soul, was to grow too fast. They've peaked and now they're scrambling to open new market segments (specifically minority demographics) to overcome market saturation and maintain their current level of sales. Triumph is obviously growing slowly, maybe too slow, but they're not making the same mistake.

I started riding in the 60s. Harley and Triumph have always been able to occupy the same space without any real hard feelings. Little jokes once in a while.
Most poker runs I go on are 90% Harley. Have never had a bad time from a Harley rider. Then again on those runs the Harley owners are riders. I think thats the difference. I have seen some Triumphs for sale on this site that have been gargage queens too with the low miles.
Our bikes are unique, if you buy one and don't ride it often then what would you be. hmmmm, poser comes to mind.
If you just want to talk about quality and technology I would suggest you not compare your bike to a Japanese bike. Yours would be 30 year old technology and be laughable to them. Harley is the lower end of the food chain for technology in the Sportster line but other than that Honda was making everything a Triumph is 30 years ago. I didn't buy my bike for the technology, if I did then I would be pretty dumb. I bought the Triumph cause its cool and I love the look. Guess I am a poser without a Harley.
Anyway, I think if you ride something, but you ride it, you are my friend and I won't be sniping at you for what you ride.

Uh....., busy with work, school, family, etc?
Up until last year about this time, I only had 12k on my 02 (now have 17k). That's only about 3k a year for the first 4.
Does that mean I am a poser because I don't have a requisite number of miles per year?
If so, I can live with that.....

Everybody talks about the guys with the harleys with no miles etc. Buy the bike, put it in the garage and pose once in a while at the bar. I was making a point. makes you mad huh? Telling you a Honda is far superior to your bike prolly hurts too.
They like their bikes, they like their friends, they like to ride. How does that hurt us so badly we look down our noses at others?
I think teasing Harley riders is fun as a joke from time to time, I think we take it too far. We have Harley riders on this forum. It was mentioned before, the Harley sites don't bash us.
I guess they have more class.

I think any of us in here that socialize on our bikes are going to run across Harley riders who give some friendly Eddie Haskell "business". But with the guys I ride with sometimes, it's all in fun. Just last Sunday the guy behind me at the light we're sitting at had his Softail breakdown. I just heard a pop sound, and knew right way it wasn't good because it didn't sound like a backfire. Luckily there was a pickup trick running behind him that blocked traffic until he could get it off the street. Now I couldn't let an opportunity like that go by so I told another guy in our group: "Should have bought a Triumph". It got a laugh like it was supposed to, but I felt bad for the guy whose bike was broke. He was supposed to leave the next day for Sturgis. I have to give credit to the local Harley dealer. They were on the scene in 15-20 minutes with a trailer, and said they'd do all they could to get it fixed by the next day. And this was on a Sunday. I'd have been SOL if my bike broke down on a Sunday, because the Triumph dealer is closed on Sunday and Monday. Of course another guy pointed that out to me, and I had to agree with him that I'd be screwed if I was going to Sturgis the next day. I haven't heard yet if Jack got his bike fixed, but I hope he did. Jack's a good guy...even if he rides a Harley.

The Triumph Daytona just won the Motorcyclist Magazine bike of the year. It was the innovative technology and design that really impressed them when they had their write up a few months back. With the exception of the Rocket III cruisers don't often blaze new trails.

I agree with you. I've had this "discussion" here before. A lot of the folks around here like to bash Harleys and Harley riders, they all come back to the riders attitude, but I must say that the majority of the members that post here , are the ones with the real attitude, even the ones who never owned or even rode a Harley, I'm one of those that believe in let those who ride decide, whether it be helmet laws , or the brand that they decide to spend there own $ on, Things in life are subjective, so to say your better or your bikes better, seems to me kind of like a bully at school, pick on the other guy to make yourself feel better. I too belong to Harley forums and have NEVER seen them bashing other peoples bikes, Oh well whatever floats your boat, like my dad used to say about people who picked on other peoples choices, maybe they're trying to make up for their "short comings". Let those who ride decide.

Actually, Im with Dwight here.
IF i had the money i too would buy one of those Anniversary SuperGlides. I test rode one a while back and absolutely loved it. The bike throbed and vibrated, the thing felt like it was alive. Great bike.
But that wont stop me taking the pi$$ out of Harleys and their riders. Have you ever seen a Gold Wing rider with a patch on his back saying, "I'd rather push my Gold Wing than ride a hog", doubt it.
How come its all right for people on here to look down on those Japanese made Harley Wannabees. How come its ok to take the pi$$ out of the Crotch Rocket riders in the power ranger suits. Dont very often see people jumping up and down and complaining about that.
Why is Harley Davidson off limits.
Lastly, in defense of myself. I take the pi$$ out of everyone, Because im a Brit. And that what we Brits do, we take the pi$$....Because were British.
Now, im thinking about getting on to our moderators about staring a new thread list so i can teach you locals how to speak this langauge of 'OURS'. I tired of you all mispronoucing the word Tomatoe. And for your information, there are three syllables in JAGUAR.

It aint all right for people to get down on anyone elses ride , no matter what it is, but if that is what your ego needs, go for it, as for me, I'll enjoy what i decide to ride and let others do so too, without passing judgement. I guess I'm lucky I aint British, cuz"thats what we Brits do" dont make it right.

I can't afford to buy a lifestyle. But my house is paid off, my family has never gone hungry, and I try to treat everyone with respect until they prove themselves unworthy. If someone has to buy a lifestyle to show the world they're better than me, well, they wasted a lot of money and pegged the needle on the unworthy meter.....

It just occurred to me that most people responding to this post, myself included, addressed the "lifestyle" part of the subject line more than the "buying" part that you focused on.
More to ponder...

Brummie, A freind of mine is a white van man in London. He delived a few times ot the new stadium at Asburton Grove. He tells me that the security guards there have taken a few bribes to let the spurs fans in and there is a whole bunch of spurs stuff buried in the concrete. Arsenal defense will do just fine this year. We will score so many goals that it wont matter if we let a few in. Besides, Chelsea have got the league in the bag this year. Were all fighting for second again.

If we're talkin' LIFESTYLES here people, I'd say Mark and Brummie here are a PRIME EXAMPLE of a "life left unexplored".
You see, if they REALLY wanted a "lifestyle", they'd GIVE UP this fascination of their's with THAT particular sport, and concentrate on one where...people are encouraged to use their HANDS!
Cheers,

(but comparatively speaking, and IN THEIR DEFENSE[note the "s" in defense there Mark], I suppose a soccer ball IS a hell of a lot LESS expensive than a DYNA GLIDE, huh???!!!)

But i wasnt lying was I.
You see this is how it goes. England, as in the old Country invents something, and then you guys come along and try to do it, realize you cant and so change it to make easy for yourselfs.
Case in Point. In England they invent this game called Football, play if for a few years and then with a few little tweeks come up with another game called Rugby. Then you watch all the imigrants playing this game here in the US and you all think. Hey that looks like fun, lets have a go. But quickly realise that "oh bugger, we have to run. hmm, i got an idea, lets stop running every 10 seconds and have a break. Good idea you all think. but then someone notices, hey hang on here. Those guys are getting kicked , oh no. I know. Lets wear a 100lbs of padding . Great, but oh, now we cant kick it. OK, lets use out hands. Eureka. Oh but hang on, the games an hour long. At 10 seconds per play thats erg, erg a lot of times to play. we need more players. Lets have 100 players each on each team then our players can all have a little go with out getting tired. And thus...Handball was invented.
Now onto Baseball. Have you seen Cricket. Do you understand the very simple rules. NO...Thus Rounders, oops sorry, Baseball was invented.
We can go on. First there was Triumph. Then came ...well, you know where this is going.

We lost the colonies because our German mercenaries surrendered to George Washington instead of fighting to the death like they were told ! So the result is null and void ! Can we have them back please ?
If you do it today you MIGHT regret it. If you CAN'T do it tomorrow you WILL regret it.

I too belong to Harley forums and have NEVER seen them bashing other peoples bikes,
I was browsing the forums today at v-twinforum.com( not a small site either...V-TwinFORUM.com Statistics: Threads: 76,645, Posts: 810,961, Members: 42,361) and came across this sticky post on the japanese/european cruiser board:
--------------------- Respect
I believe it is time to put a stop to all this childish bickering. Yes this started out as a HD forum and yes Dave was threatened by HD with a lawsuit unless he made some changes. As a request from some members, metric , Buell and Victory forums were added. In respect to those members, bashing will not be allowed here. If it is your intent to take that route, do it in an open forum (off topic or general talk). If a rider of one of the above mentioned bikes takes it upon themselves to bash HD or any other bike, then take that to an open forum. Keep the specific threads as they were intended."
-------------------------
Looks like to me at one time this Harley forum had a hard time with people bashing other brands so they had to put up a sticky to get people to stop.
I'm only pointing out this post to refute your contention that on Harley boards they don't bash other brands. To me it's no big deal if you do or not, as long as it's in good taste and meant to be humorous. Like I said before, a lot of the guys I ride with have Harleys and there's always some friendly digs at each other's rides.

I can live with that.
And in addition. The description of this area of the web site does say
Other Bikes
BSAs, Nortons, other Triumphs, and of course... Harley bashing.
So maybe we should keep HD bashing to the Other Bikes area only.
