How does powercoat stick to chrome pipes? I know I've seen someone on the site with them.I'll do them at work where we have a black and brown paint line.

Absolute best is to strip them first. Otherwise, use fine steel wool to get a satin finish so there will be just enough texture to stick good.

Another dumb question here I did do a little research on powder coating and heat, but did not find anything that said it could or could not withstand the heat of mufflers. Is there a heat resistant type or are you using just plain ol' powder coating?


BA has Freak, 160mains, 44pilots, air mix3 1/2 to 4 turns, BUBS dresser dogs. Never had more fun on any bike - 2nd bike 2008 RIIIT

According to my long time (15 year)powder coater/biker friend, powder coating will not last on exhausts. The operating temp is too high. They recommend and use a ceramic coating, choice of silver, pewter, or matte black for about $225.00.

Thanks Chris. I think the silver would look pretty nice and match the sides of the tank.

Guys, I just dropped my headers and pipes off at Performance Coatings in Jonesboro GA. They are being ceramic coated in satin black and I should have them back in about a week. With the ceramic coating there is a three year guarantee that it won't flake or bubble or anything like that. For a set of unfinished pipes, and the stock headers I'm paying $130. Once I get them back I will do my best to post some pictures.

I believe Jaymo has the silver coating on his bike. I'm not sure if he has any pics up in the new gallery yet though.

I had the headers on our Bonneville powdered black. It's chipping/flaking around the head. I'd Jet Hot them.

You can powdercoat your exhaust. Eastwood makes a variety of high temp powdercoat to withstand upto 1200 degrees. A lot of hot rod guys get their headers powdercoated. You can a few shades of silver plus your standard blacks.


Brent if your exhaust is chipping I recommend to take it back to your pwdercoater. The most common cause of powdercoat shipping is undercoaking. This means the powder wasn't cooked at the recommended time length. Once the powder melts(glosses over) there is a recommended time period for it to bake( depending on size of piece, type of metal) This allows the powder to form an indestructible bond with your metal. If the piece was undercooked, that bond isn't formed and chipping or flaking occurs.


You can pwdercoat right on top of chrome. It makes for a beautiful finish. A lot of the sportbike riders are chroming and then using anodizing powdercoat over top for the colored chrome effect. A beautiful effect I must say.
