I'm happy to report that today i checked my header clamps to find a couple bolts a bit loose, then tightened them and put red silicone at the muffler joints and the pipes are significantly quieter. i rode for a while w/o ear plugs and it was tolerable. not as quiet as i'd like, but it really took the edge off. I've used the silicone before but i've had the mufflers off many times and never bothered after the first few because it didn't seem to make a difference. But then i always wear ear plugs so i probably just didn't notice. Either that of it was the header clamps that were allowing blow-by.
