Now, that is the real difference. Go for as long a test ride on both bikes as the dealer will allow and let your back decide. The handle bars and risers, and the seat are different. The pegs are the same. If you like the seating position on one, but just have to have the blacked out or shiny look of the other, buy the look you want because it is easier to swap bars and seats than to refinish the engine.
As for the differences in engine spec's, you can get a lot more power and torque from the America easily enough by modifying the intake system a little and adding less restrictive pipes. On the later Speedmasters, you really need to change the cams for the same sort of changes to be effective. To meet emissions standards, the valve timing on the SM is probably milder than the 1902 Triumph.
