You see, it's like this.......first came the TBA. Then when they realized what they did wrong, they improved all those things and called it the speedmaster.

You SM guys got to lighten up a bit. If your quote was true, why did they put too low of a front sprocket on it? Why is the America seat more comfortable? I still think the America looks better - especially chromed out.

Wow, didn't think this would get so much fun bull$&@% flying around. Thanks for all the info. I'm definatly going to ride both a couple of times before deciding. Then it will be if to get a used or new one. Now, that is the real difference. Go for as long a test ride on both bikes as the dealer will allow and let your back decide. The handle bars and risers, and the seat are different. The pegs are the same. If you like the seating position on one, but just have to have the blacked out or shiny look of the other, buy the look you want because it is easier to swap bars and seats than to refinish the engine.
As for the differences in engine spec's, you can get a lot more power and torque from the America easily enough by modifying the intake system a little and adding less restrictive pipes. On the later Speedmasters, you really need to change the cams for the same sort of changes to be effective. To meet emissions standards, the valve timing on the SM is probably milder than the 1902 Triumph.

I have an 03 TBA, which I changed to Brent's tall round polished risers, with Speedie bars,
tilted down at the grips. At the same time, I put on the footboards.
This new combo puts me in a slight forward lean, taking the pressure off my lower back.
With the addition of the "Throttle Rocker" from JC Whitney(about 10 bucks) I've more than
tripled the distance I can comfortably ride in a day.

The Throttle rocker looks like a pretty good idea especially for the price. I saw the written benifets listed on the web site. Now that you have it, are there any "CONS" you would like to report?

I have one and love it. If there's one problem it's that you can't (well, may not be able to) use it with many custom grips that are too thick.

The only con would be that it takes a little getting used to.
You have to be carefull with close-quarters manuevers or
you'll rev it when you don't want to.
You'll wonder how you ever got by without it.

If you can afford the 800 bucks for the drive you should certainly do that. No more chain lube and much more quiet. Those belts last forever.
