I just got a pair of the 4001 silicon diodes, 50v, 1 amp, max from Radio Shack for 59 cents a pair. The part number is 276-1101. I got some heat shrink tubing to electrically insulate the leads.

I have not installed them (as Sandman described) yet because my LEDs have not yet arrived.
