How many people with the Freak are running a better crankcase breather? I know Pat and Benny have the Krankvent. So what are the advantages over the little K&N filter that comes with the Freak? I know this has been discussed before on the old board, but that was over 2 years ago. Seems a bit much at $76. Just wondering if it's worth it.

The little breather gizmo with the freak is basically a small air filter that catches oil as it breathes back out of the motor. You need to drain them of the oil ocassionally as the original; setup sent this into the airbox, to go through the carbs to be burned up. EPA stuff. A lot of us guys just took the breather hose and secured it so as it dripped oil, it went onto the chain. Kills two birds with one stone, and does you part for global warming. Oh yeah, I did some dyno runs with and without just the Krankvent and there was NO increase at all. But the Harley shop says the main reasohn for them is to reduce the internal pressure in the case, under the pistons, which aids in keeping the gaskets and seals from blowing with the pressure on each downstroke. On older bikes they would pretty much stop the leaking issues you have.

Sounds like I just saved $76. Still haven't had a chance to take my bike up to the ton or better with the Freak on, but I did 50 miles around town yesterday and I'm liking the slight addition in accelleration. I think I might've found a line on a cheaper dyno run. The local Victory dealer has something new called "Dyno Days" the 2nd Saturday of every month. I went down to a local bike night they co-sponsor and tried to find out more, but left before they showed up when a thunderstorm was getting close.

On my Thruxton, have a krankvent with a 2" X 1 1/2" rubber topped K&N breather that butts up against the bottom of my fuel tank, between the right carb manifold and rear cyl head frame brace. Harley site says krankvents do not make hp; http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/crankvent_test.htmCheers..............Agro

I did a 'do-it-yourself' Freak...cut away airbox lobes, installed pod filters ($50), carb brace ($35) and a crankcase breather ($25, I believe). Got the parts from Bellacorse. Saved a couple hundred bucks. Installed the breather on the chrome T100 sprocket cover. The bolts were just long enough, and it looks like it was made to be there.

Gladly Crusty. I'll get some photos together and try to figure out how to get'em on the site....it wasn't all that difficult once I got into it.

Doug, Did you leave the side cover mounting points and faux breather covers? I'd kind of like to see what these bikes would look like with just the K&N's showing and minimal covers or no covers. Regards, Rich

Hey Rich - I left off the faux breather covers. I left just enough of the airbox to mount the side cover on the right. The box still needs to be trimmed back a bit when I get time. On the left side, I cut away everything back to the battery. I'm in the process of fashioning a plate to cover the remainder of airbox. I like the raw, powerful look of the exposed pods. I'll try to get some photos up soon.

dog, You cannot just remove the crankcase hose or you will get some oil spitting out the motor onto the part below the gas tank. The breather runs from the clutch side to the airbox and this is vented into the carbs. Who though of this brilliant design is anyone's guess. (Yea, I know, EPA rules) But you can take the breather hose and re-route it so that it actually oils your chain for you. If you pull your airbox you need to still route it somewhere. You can zip tie it so it spits onto the ground or the cahin. The little filter things are cute, but when you think about it, they fill with oil and you have to drain them out ocassionally. So, it is always better to mount the end of the breather at a point lower than the point where it comes out of the clutch side cover. Do your part for global warming! I spray a full can of deoderant into the air in my backyard once a week, I have my own personal hole in the ozone so I am warmer than my neighbors. It helps with the heat bills in the winter too.

Thanks for the inform. i know you can't just remove the tube from the crankcase, that would just blow oil over everything, so the synthetic oil is ok for the chain, it probaly is ok but won't it collect alot of road grim?

Pat......what are the negitive effects of the breather terminating in the air box? I've heard people say thier airbox had oil in it, now i see why. Also, why do some people get that and others not?? Maybe depends on how often you go wot?

The amount of oil should be minimal, nothing to worry about. 1-2 drops on very hard long rides as all.
