I just got back from NC and during my stay I rode the Dragon (Tail of the Dragon, Deals Gap, NC). I was there with a friend on a Sunday, so it was crowded. Probably 1000 bikes on or parked just off the Dragon. My friend had his 74 Bonneville and me on my 2002 BA. The 74 was much faster, I keep scraping my pegs and a couple of times the heels of my boots. Besides our two Triumphs I only saw two others, a Tiger and a Sprint ST. The Dragon use to be mainly sport bikes, but now there seemed to be just as many cruisers (mostly Harleys).

The place probably isn't that much fun anymore, there was a reader submission in the August Edition of "Rider" that there is a huge Law Enforcement between Tennessee and North Carolina to crack down on people having their fun through the dragon. I'm glad I had my chance to enjoy the dragon during Honda Hoot '04!

I often go to the Dragon. But i always take a day of work to go there. The weekends there are just to many people up there. Weekedays is much less crowded.

Lee.
Im guessing you are about the same distance form the Dragon as me but for the over direction. Im 30 miles north of Chattanooga on I-75, it takes me a little over an hour to get there. I was planning on taking a day off soon and going for a ride up there. We could meet up.

Yep, forty minutes of hard riding to Robbinsville....Western NC was recently blessed with the addition of six motorcycle policemen to patrol the area (they made the headlines and local newscasts)....its okay with me, a lot of those crotch rocket guys are a bit reckless (there's at least a death a month between the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway), but it sure makes it tough on a guy like me who chooses to forego the DOT required helmet and sports a barely there beanie--at $200 a pop for the ticket that hurts....I haven't been stopped yet down that way, but its inevitable I guess. Arsenalfan, PM me before ya head this way next time and we'll meet up.......

I live 23.3 miles from the beginning of the Dragon, so I ride it about 2-3 times a month. I agree that the night time rides are unique. Next time you do it, come to a stop about midways (assuming there's little traffic), turn off the engine and lights, and listen. It's totally dark and quiet -- talk about scary!
