When I had the Triumph footboards installed on my '06 America I asked the dealership to insure that the shift and brake pedals were 1-1/2" above the boards so the toes of my boots would slide under them on long-haul trips. That 1-1/2" gives a bit of addition clearance just above the toes for foot moving.
They did it, I'm happy.
