I have always had excessive slack in the cush drive. Some have cured this by going to the tbs cush drive. Me being cheap and after inspecting mine and not seeing anything wrong with it tryed this. I happened to have some old rubber strapping that I cut and made shims out of. The belt was about 1/4 inch thick. I think I made about 5 shims. Thigtened things up nicely. Been running this for a few thousand miles now and seems to be working well.

You are cheap. Tell me, the cush drive is the rubber in the back hub right. How do know your play is to much. I had my bike on the lift, left my bike in gear and turned my tire forward and back. Made some marks and measured the play. I measure 1/4". Is there suppose to be no play or is this still ok. What is the max play or does this cause any damage.

The service manual states "Inspect for wear and replace if necessary". How's that for an accurate spec?
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

There should be NO play in the cush drive rubber. If your chain feels like it's slipping off the line or when changing gears, it's time for a new one. When it feels like it's slipping, you're putting excess torque on the entire driveline from the chain and sprockets all the way up to the transmission.
Shimming it with some rubber strips will get some more life out of it, but I'd like to hear how long that temp repair lasts. I put in the Tbird rubber at 34,000 miles after mine went, and it fits more snug than the stock one. Costs about $75 or so through the Triumph dealer.
