Went to a clothing / department store Saturday where they were having an open house. Free food, free beer, and live band. They had just about everything that you could imagine there, the only problem everything had this strange logo on it and oh yea there were about 12 bikes there for sale as well, but with the same logo on them as all the other merchandise that they were trying to sell. I think the logo was something like Hardley something or another! I am just amazed at the crap that you can buy with the logo, you name it they got it or I am sure they can get it or somebody will make it just give it time. They had dog toys, coffee and coffee cans, light switch covers, pull chains for ceiling fans, wall paper as well as borders, all types of trinkets, teddy bears, pin ball machines and a whole plethera of other crap, they even have wedding sets (rings) that have the logos on. Boy that is love!! of what though?? Is nothing sacred??????? They dished out money to have their little affair but they were definitely selling there crap at the same time, the couple that I rode down to the open house with spent over $100.00 on 4 or 5 T-Shirts and yes there were even some people there dealing on new bikes. Oh and the owner of this fine establishment the upstanding citizen that he is, is currently in jail on charges of raping one of his employees and sexually assaulting another. Yes I am proud to wear Triumph shirts and stuff and wish that there was a little more available but where does it end with that other company????? I don't doubt that they make more money on their merchandise than they do on their bikes and accessories.

I say good for them! Harley has done what just about all other manufacturing companies could only dream of.. everyone tries to push their 'brand', and nobody has been more successful than Harley. Don't worry about it.. just enjoy the free food/beer/bands Cheers, Brad

It is true, a majority of Harley's income is from apparrel and the likes... the are a model to other companies as to the ultimate goal in branding. They made a name selling bikes, but made money selling crap about/for the company... meanwhile companies like Triumph and Depends only wish they could sell pinball machines and light switch covers. Their success = free food/beer/bands. I agree with MrUnix... but you can enjoy it knowing that you didn't waste hard earned money for their image and you can thank anyone with a Harley shirt for the free food and stuff.

I just got an invite in the mail from the Mason City dealer for a free pig roast and topless bike wash next Sat. Pity I haven't even ordered parts for the totaled one yet. I keep going out and making a list but for some reason there is no fire in me to get her back in shape... I'm sure it will come in time ModelMaker

It's amazing that how some department stores are starting to try to sell bikes. Must be a trendy thing.

HD has done very well for themselves, selling everything under the sun with a HD logo on it... But they still make most of their money from motorcycles, not clothing and Christmas ornaments. From the HD first quarter 2006 financial statement:
Revenue from Harley-Davidson motorcycles was $1.01 billion, an increase of $29.6 million, or 3.0 percent over the same period last year. Shipments of Harley-Davidson motorcycles totaled 79,506 units, an increase of 2,790 units, or 3.6 percent over last year’s first quarter.
Revenue from Parts and Accessories (P&A), which consists of Genuine Motor Parts and Genuine Motor Accessories, totaled $182.9 million, an increase of $6.0 million, or 3.4 percent over the year-ago quarter.
Revenue from General Merchandise, which consists of MotorClothesâ„¢ apparel and collectibles, totaled $68.6 million, an increase of $9.1 million, or 15.3 percent.
Still, when I am finally able to buy another bike, it is likely to be a Triumph, not a Harley.

They still sell motorcycles? Last time I went to the place Piglet was bought, they had maybe 6 or 8 new bikes way in the back. They were almost as hard to find as the parts counter.

I went into a "Harley" store in a casino in Vegas several years ago. Lots of clothes and doodads but not a single motorcycle.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Wish they had a breakdown on parts, I wonder how many are cash and carry? Considering how often a harely owner tells me how simple his bike is, they still bring it to the dealer for anything.

Niagara Falls has a Harley Boutique right across from the Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum (you know, next to the Frankenstien Museum ). Even considering the $ exchange rate, prices were 30-40% higher for T-shirts. The place was booming! And no bikes for sale! Mike Sr.

They have (or had?) a HD store in the local mall, no bikes of course, but they did have the diapers (really!) and dog food bowls and tp and etc etc

Phil, I have the triumph stickers on my car and on my lawn tractor. My one friend still thinks it is actually a Triumph tractor. I won't tell.

YEP! There's nothin' in the world that makes some people PROUDER to be an American, than sportin' a HARLEY-DAVIDSON t-shirt that's made in China, boy! Cheers, Dwight (and chaps from Pakistan too)

Well I don't understand what you're all so worried about. I went to the Triumph online store today (http://www.triumph.com/uk) and discovered LOTS of apparel, which quite frankly is much more fun to look at than any of the stuff on the Harley site. Some interesting wallpaper and screen savers!
The down sides were (a) no motorcycles and (b) I couldn't find a decent men's t-shirt with "Triumph America" on it. And I spent a good hour looking...

I have a Triumph sticker on my truck, half a dozen Triumph t-shirts, and even a Triumph leather jacket (although you can't tell unless you look close.)
There's nothing wrong with wanting to show your association with a group that shares common values. We all do it to some extent. Of course, a t-shirt is one thing - looking like a Harley store threw up on you is something entirely different!
Is there any other brand or label on earth that goes to this extreme?

I was on a cruise a few years ago that stopped in the Bahamas - there was even a HD store there but not one motorsickle in the place - but they could order you one! On a trip to the local Menards(home improvent stoce like home depot or lowe's) tonight, I saw this..... All the lights light up and so does the orange ring around the bottom.

I was trying to think of a joke about "you have to provide your own loud pipes sound" or "does it come in a Screamin' Eagle version?" but there are just too many possibilities. Insert your own punch line here...

Here in the Tidewater area of S.E. Virginia is "Bayside Harley," of Portsmouth. They also own a store, with bike sales, in Elizabeth City, N.C. and a Clothing and Trinkets (no bikes) store in Nags Head, N.C.
In Virginia Beach (west side) there is Southside Harley (bikes/service) and they also have a no-bikes Clothing and Trinkets store right in the middle of the resort area of Virginia Beach.
As stated above, H-D likes to sell stuff.

John Deere is getting that bad, went for parts the other night and now they have the offical JD gunsafe on display. A couple of years ago they even gave away a HD/covered with Deere logos, the ultimate in brand whoring.

A couple of years ago they even gave away a HD/covered with Deere logosNot exactly a HD, but this guy decked out his Boss Hoss in JD green on his own: And while JD has marketed it's brand pretty well over the years, I would say it's nothing compared to HD or even Coke (coca-cola) or Disney.. you will never see a JD store that doesn't sell equipment first, accessories and related items second. Cheers, Brad

What I see JD and HD doing is selling their items at non owned stores. IE walmart, you can buy shirts, pillows and even fabric in either logo. This gets the name out there, but I my opinon it would be better to get the customers into your own store so they might buy more of your products. heres the link of the bike they raffled off to JD credit customers, yes I did enter. http://www.deere.com/it_IT/images/library/news/2005/harley.jpg

So you can sit on a POS whilst passing a POS? (Sorry, that's the best I can do on short notice).
Hollywood HD is in a narrow store that used to sell pizza by the slice. No bikes, no place for bikes, and they won't sell you one. Lots of shirts, shorts, gothic looking leather stuff and chrome doodads to hang on various body parts.

what makes me laugh is all the people walkin around with h.d. t-shirts and stickers on their cars and trucks and all the other parafinalia and they dont even own a bike let alone a h.d. they dont none of them think about the fact that they are advertiseing for a co. and not getting paid for it. there was a time when you would get paid to walk around town with a billboard strapped to your chest. these fools paid (overpaid) to advertise for a co. they dont even have stock in hahahahahahahahahaha i often ask strangers (for instance in the line at the grocery store) when i see them with a h.d. t-shirt, do they ride and more often then not they say...No??? i always look at them funny and then ask if h.d. is paying them to advertise hahahahahaha first they tend to get this look of HUH on there face and then it always gets them thinkin hahahahahahaha but i think it was Coca Cola that started the trend?????? why would you advertise for a co. that you had no interest in??? YOUR TELLING ME, YOU DONT EVEN RIDE hahahahahahahahaha AND YOUR WALKIN AROUND WITH A BILLBOARD ON YOUR CHEST hahahahahahahaha.
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

JD stuff is all over Wal-mart and a bunch of other department storesExactly.. you won't find JD 'boutiques' like you do with HD, Disney and some others. If you go to a JD dealership, the machines are the focus, accessories are the afterthought. As for the free advertising others have mentioned, having kids, I see it all the time. DKNY, Abercrombie and Fitch, Nike, etc.. I'm always asking my daughter 'how much did you have to pay to advertise for them' and just get a blank stare. It's amazing that a $6 shirt can get bumped up to $25 or more just by putting a 'brand' on front Cheers, Brad
