Gina posted a link to an article from the Times Online in another thread. The article is called Triumph roars on while Norton develops misfire. It is pretty darn good article about Kenny Dreer's rise and fall with the new Norton.

There is one line that I thought was pretty darn cool and funny... "Harley Davidsons — as any fool knows — are for fat people and accountants. Triumph, the bike of Brando and McQueen, is cool again."

I didn't read the article properly....was just looking for the bit about Norton...

But hey, didn't we know that we are all cool already?

As for the Harley comment....what else can be said?

Bummer! I love the fact that all of us on the site have been smart enough (and perceptive enough) to recognise that our bikes are a cut above the rest - cool in the extreme. But now, folks who make decision based on tips from the press will go out and buy Triumphs, thus making them more common and, ultimately, devaluing the cool factor.

I say someone should fire back and tell the writer that Triumphs are NOT cool, and then we can continue to bask in the solipsistic sunshine of our smug little world of knowing better than everyone else

I had a sneaking suspicion that I was a lot cooler since purchasing my bike, at least I felt cooler, but now it has been confirmed. Thank you Times.

But honestly...look at all the bikes out there. Sure some of the Harleys & customs portray that whole "bad boy" thing, but which bikes are cool? I think the COOLEST bikes are definately the retro-styled Triumphs...Bonnie, Thruxton, Scrambler, etc...

The BA's & SM's are in a totally different class altogether, almost a "custom retro" type class.

I was very, very close to purchasing a 2000 Road Star last Friday, but couldn't do it. I then went and rode a Kawasaki Vulcan 900 and realized how much a brute the R* was. I almost purchased the Vulcan, but couldn't get over the fact that when it was parked next to an 06 R*, it looked the same. The Vulcan was a superior bike in every way except displacement, but it was doing its best impression of a bike that was copying an HD. Something was missing.

I feel that the TBA and SM are adaptations to the cruiser market, and take just enough of the cruiser styling of the past 7-8 years, while combining it with the unmistakeable British influence. My first bike, an 81 XS650 Yamaha, was emulating a Triumph (as far as I can tell), and I loved it.

Now Triumph has a genuine cruiser that a fella of my size can feel comfortable on, not only size-wise, but intellectually.

My Speedmaster gets quite a few compliments like "nice bike", "viscious bike", "beautiful bike", "what year is that?" that it's not just mass hysteria on the part of TBA and SM owners about how great they are.

And not just good-looking, but well made and a blast to ride!

I was at Gooch's Garlic Run on Wednesday and there were only (about) 10 Triumphs out of over 2,000 bikes. It's nice to be unique.

This is a prediction that I've made before and I'll make it again:
Triumph is going to be the Next Big Thing in motorcycling (again) and will return to a place of prominence in the next couple of years.

So you're saying that someday J&P Cycles will acknowledge the presence of our bikes?

NOW do you people around here SEE how to speak "Dwightish"???

Notice, if you will, Dave's almost perfect use of the parenthetic phrase, which is often offered at the end of a definitive statement in order to elicit a CHUCKLE or two from the reader.(and which I did indeed DO after reading this last input of your's, Dave)

That was a good one!

Cheers,
Dwight

LOL!
Hi Mark, YES!
J&P, Cruiser Customizing etc will all realize they're missing out on an important segment of the metric cruiser market.

One of the reasons I buy from Brent whenever possible is because I SOOOOOO look forward to finding the tasty mint enclosed in the box with whatever the hell I ordered at the time.

The only thing better would be a tasty Jaffa Cake.

The last paragraph in that article states that there's "speculation" about Triumph acquiring Norton.

I wonder who's speculating this, and if those speculators really know anything that we don't?

Cheers,

I'll work on it, Dwight...as YOU know from the MANY years you've obviously spent mastering the art of written expression, it don't come EASY...but practice makes perfect, and I SHALL persevere though weary I become at times!

There are few who frequent this forum that can comprehend the subtle power of "Dwightish"...(they may YET see the light!)

Its always nice to see somebody outside confirm what we always knew.

A British article wrote in a John Bloor story: Triumph was once regarded as cool as Harley Davidson, only faster. Steve McQueen rode one in The Great Escape, Brando in The Wild One, and it doesn't get much cooler than that this side of Absolute Zero.

On the Norton note, Mr. Bloor is not a dumb man. It would be a good idea for him to pick up the rights to Norton now in the event he sees a use for it later. Triumph and Norton are for obvious prior history thought of as being together.

I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

MAYBE, the coolest of the cool!!!

AND, riding Triumphs CERTAINLY burnished that image of his!

But I wonder...was he really COOL ENOUGH to speak......DWIGHTISH???

Does Triumph really equal cool?
Or does cool equal Triumph?
Now before ya go askin' "what's the difference?" let me elaborate: Did I buy a Triumph to be cool? Or did I buy a Triumph because I am cool?

Answer; Steve McQueen was cool, so he rode a Triumph.
If ya buy a Triumph to be cool, well ya might make it, 'cause that's a lot of help .

But my personal theory here is: Cool people ride Triumphs. Because Triumphs are cool...

OK, enough Pacifico for tonight .

Okay Bill. A BIT of a rambling discourse there...but...I THINK I get what you're sayin', Bro!

My only question is...If the term "cool" becomes overused in the lexicon and thus commonplace, does it cease to be...well...COOL???

Jeff,

Now I KNOW some people around here are going to call me a nitpicker(BTW if you've ever had your nit picked, you KNOW how much THAT can hurt).....BUT.....the phrase to show contempt IS..."I COULDN'T care less"... expressing the idea that it would be impossible to care any less about something.(a concept that seems to personify my company's upper management's thoughts about yours truly and my co-workers lately)

Cheers,
Dwight(the nitwit....errr....nitpicker, that is)
