If you look at the splined gearchange shaft coming out of the bottom of the LH sidecover, you'll notice that that linkage is secured by a bolt, onto the splined shaft. If you undo the bolt, you can slide the linkage end off the shaft and re-orient it either forward or backward, if you shift it backward, you'll be lowering the shifter closer to the peg, if you shift if forward, you'll be raising the shifter away from the peg. If this is a new bike, you may find that getting a few miles under your belt will see the trans/gearchange mechanism loosen up a little.
