Another reason for differences is the fact that the odometers are not very accurate. I've measured mine on the interstate by going 10 miles and seeing how much it is off. If it is one tenth off, your odometer is 10% off. I decided on the highway today that mine is reading about 10-15% less miles than I'm traveling. So ALL my mileage and distance till reserve needed to increased. Now I'm up there with most of you guys. I plan to get a more accurate error check with a GPS.
The other interesting fact is that my spedo reads FASTER than I'm actually going. Measured with a GPS, at 78 mph, I'm actually going 73 mph. This is the reverse error of the odometer.

I get about 165 to reserve and have done nothing except remove the first baffles, install an K&N filter and 17 sprocket. I am hesitant to do anything else that might reduce this number.

Keep your current set-up and go to an 18t sprocket and that number will go up even more.

I get right at 160 to reserve every time. But, I installed the Pingle petcock which I think has a lower reserve inlet port. Has anybody tested the limits of reserve with the Pingle or know how much is left in the tank when switching over? Rich

I hit 157 last night when I ran out again, then put it on reserve and ran out the reserve after another 8 - 10 miles.

The dealer that sold me my SM told me to practice reaching for the reserve switch. Good thing. I always run til reserve; when I get up to about 150 miles I'm expecting the throttle to start being unresponsive. Used to be about 160, but since I got my D&D's I think I'm riding a bit different. (Like to stay in those lower gears a little longer!)

The inaccuracy of the Speedometer is common to many bikes/manufactures. In fact, I think it is intentional. I ride with a GPS often and although the speedometer is approx. 7% off the odometer is dead on.
Been getting 46+mpg all summer long. 42 at the beginning of the year and actually hit 49mpg in the last few weeks.

Interesting, my 78 is actually 73 which is approx. 7% off like yours. But my odometer is almost 15% off, so my 40 mpg average equals your 46.

Ramsound, a tenth off in ten miles is only 1% error. Your odometer isn't very far off after all. I checked mine on the parkway milemarker system and found it to be very close.

My VW Golf and Honda Magna read 3 & 5 MPH, respectively, higher than actual at 70 MPH. Yup, sounds pretty universal.
