Far as I can see, you are the only one here typifying that particular stereotype....

Well Phil,
I always have "prided myself" on being the "best" in everything I put my feeble little mind to.

Okay! Actually I've just re-read my attempts at "humor" here, and you and a few of the others who apparently found little reason to laugh at some of my input...are kind'a, sort'a...RIGHT. I DID go "over the top" and "chewed the scenery" a bit, didn't I?!

And so, to all who I've offended in this thread, I offer a REAL and SINCERE apology.

(and to that ONE GUY waaaaaay in the back who laughed...THANKS)

Dwight
(note to self....right click, highlight "copy", and save the above for the future...I KNOW[and so do most o' you guys] that I'll probably need THIS again in the FUTURE....But then again, there IS something to be said for CONTINUITY, after all)

(oooh....tough crowd)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Dwight,
I love soccer. I played in an adult league for 6 years about 15 years ago. I don't care to watch it either. Soccer (imitation football) is a participant's sport.
I am glad for whoever wins the final.
I was never good at basketball, but soccer, I was very good. It's basketball with your feet.

Grzegorz,
What is it about the teams you support losing 2 - 0 all the time? Any chance you could support Germany?

Funny, pretty much all of my German friends would have had a giggle at that, or have even said similar things...

Folks sure get their panties in a bunch around here easiy, huh? I guess any comments about Germany doing well in the WC being a "Triumph of the Will" would go over like a fart in church then...

Being a Bayern Munich fan since the 70's, when the great Franz Beckenbauer was patrolling the midfield for them, I've been rooting for Germany ever since. It was all due to watching Socccer Made in Germany on PBS back then.

My great grandfather was an immigrant to this country back around 1890 when he and his brothers came over from Germany, and they settled in Fresno, Calif...so I also have that tie in to the Germans.

I've tried to watch soccer, really. Numorous times. So I tried again Saturday for US vs Italy. I went to our proper Irish bub, Paddy Cassidy's and ordered up a Smithwicks and watched. I watched some more. I had another Smithwicks, and watched some more. Man, these guys sure run alot, do the ever score? YEAH!! Sombody scored...oh...rats. I watched some more. I got tired watching them run so much, I left before the amazing tie game ended and went home to nap.
I tried again....sorry. I used to think Nascar was boring with all those left turns, but at least there is some fender rubbing, high speed competition. Maybe soccer is like Scotch...ya have to aquire a taste for it. I'm not a quitter, so I'll probably try it again. Maybe I didn't drink enough...

Tom.

But, what do I know?

Try rugby...if you can find it on TV. Setanta has games, but you have to have Directv to get it. Some bars/pubs carry Setanta over here, but none where I live. That's why I download games off the internet. Just finished downloading New Zealand vs Ireland 2nd test last night.

Rugby is a much better game. No diving, no fake squirming whussies allowed, and no disrespect towards the ref. Not that I don't watch soccer, but this World Cup has shown all that's wrong with the game. Too many yellow and red cards just encourages more diving to lure the ref into reaching into his pocket to card the opposition. The USA v Italy match has been the defining moment so far when 3 players were sent off. I can see why they're doing it...to cut down on the hack jobs of slower players, and punish those who foul to interrupt the flow of the game. Too bad they get carried away with it and just disrupt the flow even more....that's if the ref even gets it right.

A lot of the time it's just a slight bump and a player goes sprawling to the ground in an obvious dive. How many times have you seen a player rolling around on the ground in agony, and then a couple of minutes later he's back on the pitch as if nothing had happened. You could've sworn he was gravely injured, but in reality it was nothing more than playing drama queen.

Well it isn't fixed like the WWF, or at least I THINK it isn't fixed. What with the recent match fixing scandal in Germany for league games, and the ongoing investigation into Juventus in Italy for rigging referree assignments, sometimes it makes you wonder.

England managed not to break their bogey team record against Sweden tonight
Still haven't beaten them in 34 years!!

2-1 up with a minute to go and Sweden equalised. Grrrr!
England still go through top of their group and avoid Germany in the next round.

Generally a good game and I think England played better than their previous two games.

Sunday 4pm KO against Group A runners up, Equador.

Do you mean we're not gonna get knocked out in the next round and life can go back to normal...?

Though I will admit my train this evening was a whole lot quieter than normal, and that is a good thing...

For the first half England played better than their 2 previous matches, but outside of Gerrard's goal Sweden I thought got the better of them in the 2nd half. Beckham has to do better than he did in this game, and England better shore up their defense on set pieces. Who knows what the outcome would've been if Ibrahimovich could've played, and there were 2 Sweden shots that hit the crossbar. Overall I thought England were lucky to get a tie out of it, despite leading 2-1 in the 85th minute.
