It's early days, but not looking good for the USA. A 3 - 0 defeat against the Czech Republic earlier today. Is there much enthusiasm for the tournament in the US? In England about 1/4 of the cars (and quite a few bikes) are flying English flags, and virtually every pub is covered in red and white. Our next game is at 5pm on Thursday - I'm fully expecting to get a call telling me that the meeting I'm due to attend has been postponed for some reason (Actually I have a bit of a soft spot for the USA as your goalie used to play for my team - Leicester City).

Is that the soccer thing?
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Certainly is (although it's still generally called football over here). Here's the BBC report on the USA game http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2006/4852720.stm
It really is a BIG thing over here. When England played their first game last Saturday the streets were virtually deserted (at least they were where I live, and I should think that was fairly typical).

Well, I'm not much of a fan of this sport that for some reason frowns upon the use of the HANDS, but I do catch a little of the "action" when I walk into the break room at work to find Enrique and Eduardo hoggin' the friggin' TV remote control!
Now, I have a question!
Any truth to the rumors coming out of Leipzig, that the German team has just invaded the French locker-room without much of a fight???
Cheers, Dwight

Why Gina, my dear...It's a sport that allows the use of the complete body(blocking, tackling[with the HANDS, sometimes], throwing an irregularly shaped ball[with the HANDS], running with said ball[with the HANDS], AND sometimes even kicking said ball[with the FEET])...all the while using a complex and very sophisticated stategem of maneuvers, in order to gain the opponent's ground and ultimately with the hope of striking into their protected end zone.
You see, it AIN'T for no reason we Americans are a friggin' SUPERPOWER, while you brits can only dream of lost empire.
Cheers, Dwight

Soccer has come a long way here in the ole US (important to call it soccer and not football) but its still draggin hind tit when compared to the rest of the world. Sure the girls Olympic squad has had some great to say the least efforts in recent memory and even the mens national team is greatly improved....but still a footnote on the world.
Soccer is still pretty much relegated to a "kids" game in the states. Lots of children play soccer as kids but most graduate to something else at a point in time (FOOTBALL). The term "Soccer Moms" is truthfully indicative as it applies to Moms running around town taking their kids to soccer practice. Soccer is a great game for kids or adults but its still not much a big deal here. It just does not capture the imaginaton of the average shmo. Soccer moms all invariably for the most part become FOOTBALL moms here in the states after their rugrats grow a lttle.
Perhaps some day soccer will be even half as big in the states as it is in the rest of the world but I am not gonna hold my breath waiting for that day.

I think one of the reasons for the lack of enthusiasm for the World Cup (and soccer) in the U.S. is that we have sooo many other professional sports here. Most of which are much faster paced (except for baseball) and easier to follow. We do have hockey here, which is like soccer on ice, that doesn't get as much attention or the following that baseball, football or racing does. Maybe part of it (especially with team sports in the U.S.) is that there (seems to be) more strategy involved than in hockey or soccer.

American football has often been compared to combat. It is sort of a series of set piece battles and only Aussie Rules football rivals it in general violence. Strategy, tactics, deception and surprise all play key roles. Soccer always seems more like basketball to me except with almost no scoring.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. I've watched both Aussie football and rugby many times, and rugby at the highest levels is definitely a more violent sport with bigger hits/tackles.

You are talking World Cup when the quarterback of the Super Bowl Champs, Ben Rothlesburger wrecked his motorcycle today????!!! No helmet, took a header into the windshield of a car. Last I heard he was in stable condition after surgery.

At least the FOOTBALL World Cup involves more than one nation, unlike your "World Series" baseball!.. and who was it who described American Football as "gangs of upholstered men doing violence to each other"..? hee hee just stirring.. Come on the Yankees by the way.. I used to live in New York..

I bet if the USA'd beaten the Czechs instead of getting whomped 3-0 the responses in here'd be way different. No matter...
At any rate Australia's been waiting 32 years for another shot... and we won vs Japan 3-1 last night (and the Japs had to cheat to get that one goal!)
Bring it on Brazil...

Not really. If the US won 6-0 and went deep into the tournament most people still would not care or even know the event happened.

Too busy watching all the games to post.
Poor showing by the US team yesterday, almost embarrassing. Did Landon Donovan know that he was supposed to be playing?
England was a major upset too, 1-0, and Paraguay had to put it away for them. England has an allstar team too, I'm thinking they might take it if they can pick up a bunch.
Brasil, I hope they crash and burn those lousy @$$*&%#$.
Germany, onward to victory!!!

Dwight, I know you pride yourself as an antigonist, so I'll give you one and only one chance to grossly apologize for uttering such BS.
Making the reference to the nazi party based upon German heritage is the most F-ed thing in world. You seriously need to pull your head out of your ******, if you were standing in front of me right now I'd knock your head off.

Dwight, and now the age old question... if you use your hands all the time on the ball, why is it called "football" in America and the sport that uses the feet to propell the ball loosely called soccer???? Inquiring minds want to know... ride safe... Gordon

Oh Geez, sickboy! You see, Americans are known far and wide thoughout the world as egocentric loudmouth smarta$$es(see, I'm just holding up my end of the bargain here), who even though may utter simplistic jargon(yet another seeming trait of us Americans) mean almost all of the little smarta$$ jibes that we throw out as, IN FACT..."just kidding". BECAUSE, we Americans are ALSO known to have a "GREAT" SENSE OF HUMOR and are able to laugh at ourselves and our foibles, which I think somehow shows that we who don't take themselves THAT SERIOUSLY, seem to understand that we ALSO put our pants on one leg at a time just like every other singin' dick out there does...AND, just like the proud german people do.
BUT...if you found offense in this off-handed little "quip", I guess I apologize.
Dwight (humm....and people around here, whenever the subject turns to "Political Correctness", ALL say they abhor it...I guess, that is, unless it's about..US)

Gordon,
I THINK I've just explained THAT ONE with one of my lines contained within my "apology" to Sickboy.
"We Americans are know far and wide throughout the world as egocentric loadmouth smarta$$es...,"
And so, the rest of the friggin' world's "rules"(or definitions) DON'T apply to US!((or should that read...U.S.???)
I sincerely HOPE that this now sets the record straight as to this oft times confusing little matter.
Cheers,
Dwight
