Anyone done one of these?
I tried installing the throttle side first by opening up the housing.

1) How do you remove the throttle cables? They are in there pretty tight.

Thanks
2) Will these cables need adjustment afterwards? Where do you adjust them from.

Hey ImOK,

Remove the wiring portion of the control unit via the two bolts. Look on the top of the control where the throttle cable 'pipes' go into the control part still attached. One is kept by a bolt and the other is a nut. Back/remove these and then back off the adjusters on the cables themselves as far as they can go. This will give you enough slack to remove the barrels on the ends of the cables from their keepers where they attach to the grip/throttle sleeve inside the control. Completely remove the control, slide it down and off the bars and the throttle grip will come off. Reverse for installation and adjust the cables so the throttles fully close and snaps back without drag.

btw, this would be an excellent time to re-route your cables in case you decide to mod the bars or use larger risers...

So the 'cable pipes' I should totally unbolt from the control housing and then do the back off?

Also, after I put the new grip on, the only cable adjustment is right at the 'cable pipes' using the backoffs?

Do I have to losen the handlebar assembly screws to do this?

Thanks

Yep, totally unbolted and once you unbolt them, It's easier to back off the adjusters. If the locknuts on the adjusters are tight, loosen them first. I was able to loosen the adjuster locknuts after I removed the cable ends. btw, you will not have very much slack in the cables but there is enough to slip the cable ends out of the stock grip's sleeve once everything is slacked as much as possible.

<Also, after I put the new grip on, the only cable adjustment is right at the 'cable pipes' using the backoffs?>

Yes, that's where you adjust the tightness/loosness. If they are really loose, you will be able to twist the throttle and get no movement at the carb side and if too tight, the throttle will stay open.
Make note of where the adjustments on each cable are right now and return them to about the same spot, you will be very close to proper adjustment and can tweak them from there.

I am not sure what you mean here but here goes!

You do have to completely remove the control to get the new grip on because the throttle sleeve is captured under the control. Once you have the cables removed and they are hanging loose, remove the rest of the control unit and slide the grip/control off the end of the bar. Replace with the Kuryakin and slide it back on and rebolt. Then you can put the cables back on and the wrap up with the switch side of the controls. Here's a tip. If you have your control exactly where you want it now, put a piece of masking tape on the bar and one on the control. Mark a couple of lines across both pieces and once you put it back on, line up the marks and it is exaclty here you had it before.

I hope all this makes sense!!

Phil,

Mission accomplished. The hardest part was putting on the left grip with that ****** glue. I got it on my fingers. But I did manage to put the grip on correctly.

Again, thanks for your help.

What model number grips did you use? I have the 6236, and they seem to long?

I am not sure which model they are but the size is 5-3/4" long. I left the controls in the exact same spot as stock. The grips extend by 3/4" past the end of the handlebar.

Hi Todd,

6236 is correct for us.

You should have also received a black plastic sleeve about 2" long that can fit inside the left grip. Once you have the old grips off, hold the left grip up against the bar where the control side touches the control. Measure how much longer the grip is and cut the sleeve about a 1/8" shorter. Jam this all the way in. This takes up the slack, so to speak. Glue it on. The throttle side has the sleeve almost all the way down.

A good sanding of the left bar is critical for the new grip to stick and you have maybe 5 seconds to 'get it right'. Instead of shoving and twisting I made sure the superglue they provided coated everywhere I sanded. I then shoved the grip straight on without any problem.
