Forget the Speedmasters, they didn't come out until 03. Hah! So who has the oldest BA out there, eh? The last four digits of my serial number are 3003. I know snekeptp has me beat but anyone else? (Pete, what was your last four again?)

Hey Phil,
My last 6 digits are 146551 (delivery Dec '01).
I remember looking around for Whitworth tools, reading up on Amals (been a long time since I tickled me an Amal).
I am so glad I didn't need all that.

Dennis

Phil, date-09/01 no.3890 Now...I don't know how many of you know the old saying about not wanting a bike that was built on Mondays(Basil was hungover), or Fridays(Basil can't wait for the weekend to begin), but I'd say mine was probably put together smack dab in the middle of the week by him. Except for one of those bad coils that some of the '02s had, I've had nary a problem(knock on wood...or "touch wood" for you Brits, that is) with my baby! And from what I gather, I'll bet most everybody else's around here where probably built on Wednesdays TOO! Cheers, Dwight (re: the bad coils...word is, they came from across the Channel, from a certain country that shall remain nameless)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Amals eh? I have a set in my garage for our bikes. They don't need no tickling, they already spew enough gas all over just by turning them on.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

Mine is 141693, build date 08/01. I have not seen a bike with an older build date. I think Bonnyusa , Moe and me have the same date.
I think Grzegorz needs to come to the 07 GA ralley and prove his is older.
I found a few older than mine in the archives. no telling if any of them are still members.

Aw, you're just jealous Pete! I can't remember Moe's serial # but I know it's only three numbers away from mine. We both are definitely 08/01 like you... Grzegorz, was yours an 08/01 also?

Mine is 144985 built date 09/01 and I got it new. Does anyone know now many 2002's were made? There was a factory fire in early 2002 that closed the plant for some time.

Hi Benny. Got mine from Performance Cycle in Shrewbury. The guy who originally bought it wanted a Bonneville but his wife talked him into the America. Then she finds out she's pregnant and doesn't want to ride with him, so he traded it in and got what he wanted. Which meant that I got a great deal on an awesome machine!

Good deal! That's where I got mine. "last black one" according to them for that year. I hear the guy who sold me mine (Rob?) isn't there anymore and the place has changed a bit...

A quick question for you older BA folks. This ties in to all the Thailand final assembly production talk that's out there. What is the the llth (eleventh) character of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)? The NHTSA requirements (international ISO standard since 1981) defines this character as the "plant of manufacture", but appears to leave the choice of that character up to the manufacturer. The first 3 characters are the World Manufacturing Identifier (WMI) where the first character is the country of origin. 'S' = Great Britain and 'M' = Thailand. Just curious on what the older bike VIN reflects in the 11th place. My '05 BA is a 'J'. Thanks, Tom

If S is Great Britain and M is Thailand, what is J? Japan?

Per the document in my original link, when 'J' is the first (1st) character of the VIN, it's Japan.
I have no idea what 'J' represents (besides Plant of Manufacture}, when it's the eleventh (11th) character of the VIN.
