Hey all,

I'd like to thank every one for the tips and insights. I'm learning...you're helping. Better than Home Depot. Thanks.

I haven't quite figured out how to link to the pics yet so I'm guessing here. If this link doesn't work, you'll just have to go look for yourself.

Nice job Tad! I may have to come up with something like that and put the louder horn back on.

Al,

Thanks much. 'Course, the thing is...my headlamp bucket is out getting powdercoated so my wiring harness is just hanging there. I've no idea if it works or not. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Looks great BB,

You could plug the connector blocks back together without the headlight in to test it. Wont hurt anything....

Hey Tad, did you wire that straight in or did you need a relay? I have one waiting to be mounted and I still haven't figured out the wiring. Haven't really worked on it yet, I know I need to tap into a ground somewhere, then basically wire it to the battery.

Benny,

I'm waiting to see if it works. I don't know if it will work the way I want it to but I've been told it will. One set of spades is a male/female piggy back. (No comments) They connected to the original clips to the original horn. Then to the new one. Tomorrow I'll send a pic up of the connectors.

Don,

I can't remember who suggested that I keep the old horn as well although it was someone here. Might have been Al.

One of the reasons I did was because the new horn is too big to go where the old one is. I have the crash bars from Ma's and the mounting tabs are in the way.

The old horn sits behind and between them, the new horn won't go in that space and it looked kind of ugly empty. I'll take a pic of the tabs and send that up too.

Nice work BB. Great spot for it in the pic. I love the look of the cover on the horn as well.

Tad:
Mind if I ask how much powder-coating the headlight bucket cost? I sent out the intake pipe from my '96 Impala SS to be re-done. They had to remove the old coating (bad job) and re-coat. Charged me $30, seemed pretty reasonable.

Wojo,

Was something like 34.00 shipped from JC Whitney...and it's all metal too. Chrome and housing.

Al,

That's, give or take, the cost of my bucket too. I haven't got it back yet but I was quoted 30.00 plus tax. I also sent that bent wire gathering bracket that collects all our wires and cables under the speedo. So I'm not sure what I'll end up paying in the end but for something that small, I doubt too much more.

Benny,

I just uploaded a pic of the wiring that I used. No additional ground or any other new circuitry is necessary. Two minutes with a crimper. Five minutes to bolt the whole thing on. The longest part was the bracket which is another half an hour. The LONGEST part is waiting for the paint to dry.

Don,

Wanted to thank you for your insight on that stud on the back of the horn. I had it cranked down too tight and the thing wouldn't work; all I got was the original horn. I loosened the nut up and gave the stud about 1/3 turn counterclockwise and tightened the nut back up. My son was standing in front of it and just about blew him off his feet it's so loud.

Jim,

Leave the original...it's a pretty cool combo together.

Got the pics Tad thanks. Physically wiring my hown up isn't a big deal, but it (I should say THEY, there's two dissonant horns) came with a realy! So I'm assuming I should use it:)

Benny,

I didnt' realize you were talking about a different style horn and set up. Probaby sounded pretty arrogant of me seeing as how I haven't clue when it comes to this stuff in the first place. If it came with a relay and a wiring diagram, yep, that would be my bet too. So...here's my expert advice. Don't listen to me.

Hi Benny,

On your new horn, do you know how much current it is supposed to draw? A lot of stuff comes with extras as the manufacturers try to cover all installations they envision.

You may not need the relay and possibly could wire as BlueBass did. Really depends on the current...

Hey Tad,

<Well...if you say so. I will try it tomorrow and see.>

I assumed that all you did was disconnect the headlamp, pop everything out the back of the bucket, and then remove the bucket?

When I did the bar wires, I tested without the bucket attached and no headlamp. The rest of the harness works fine like that...

btw, the 4 connector blocks (2 female, 2 male) connect interchangably. It's very easy to mate the wrong connectors. Easy way to tell they are wrong is that absolutely nothing works. Don't ask me how I know this!

Phil,

Wasn't you I was doubting, it was my ability to figure it out. Fortunately for me, the white blocks connected to the white blocks, the black blocks connected to the black blocks and the little ones had matching wires. It seemed pretty intuitive to me when I actually looked at it. And yep...it works, and it's loud. Thanks for the help.

Hey guys, I'll have to check when I get home next week to see what current they draw, but the guy who told me about them in the first place (rides a Trophy) said he wired in the relay because of the current. I tried wiring them normally, just to hear the volume, and it's almost like they hezitate for a split second before they beep. Like they almost ramp up to full blast, ya know? So I'm assuming that is the voltage drop they talk about that a relay prevents. I also don't want to cook my switch!! I know what I need to wire it, just don't know if I should tap into a hot and ground under the tank or run wires directly to the battery?

No problem Tad, always good to hash out all the details anyway, a lot of times I figure it out as I go just by mulling ot over again in my head, ya know?

I hear ya... I have a couple electrical engineer friends from college, might get one of them down here to help me out. They get a little scared around real projects, no "lab" to work in, etc, can't believe I tear my bike apart so much, but hey, they can learn!
