Anyone know what's involved in installing the tach kit on a Bonneville America?

The three allen screws remove the "instrument panel" and the tach wires plug directly into existing wiring. The little Triumph badge pops off and the tach pops in.
Thats it.

Unless you go aftermarket which is way cheaper...

Dead easy job. Takes all of 5 minutes.

So all I get is the little Tach not the whole chrome piece. Man for that kind of cash I was expecting the whole piece. Mine has some little chrome pin head size bumps. Was hoping to clean that up. Thanks for the info.

The tach kit also comes with a dash harness and a pickup wire in case you have a pre 03 model.

Where can I get an aftermarket tach that will fit in the same spot as the OEM?

I have the Triumph one and in retrospect the OEM spot SUCKS...it should be up near the speedo where you can actually see it and not have to stare at the tank....PLUS to get an accurate reading you have to lean over it and look straight down on it, other wise viewing angle skews the reading....other than that its fine!

Yep, RobBA05 is right. I have the tach on my SM, and it's bloody near useless. I'm actually considering buying one of the drag specialties ones, and then trying to get one of the OEM clocks that fit where the tach currently is.

Seriously. Don't do the tank-mounted tach. Rob is right: it sucks (especially for that much money!).

That does look clean. How exactly did you wire it up?

It doesn't just plug in if you have an'02. If I recall, you need to install extra wiring.

Sweet. I am really interested in how you wire the tach up to a '02.

Well I lucked out in that Steve Sixmill sent me his extra wiring that came with his Triumph tach. But I'll let you know how it wires up. Basically there's a red wire that we need in order for the tach to see RPM. That comes right off the coil. Then you need a hot and a ground, that's about it. The extra wiring Steve sent allows me to puck all that up under the tank console, but I am sure you could run the red wire into the headlight and pick up a hot and ground there too.

Does anyone know if this little tach would work? It sure would be discrete enough...

For the none techies i.e. me!!
Hadn't got a clue, Grzegroz looked on site for wiring instructions, took a whole five minutes to fit.
May change bracket at some time, not happy about amount of rubber, but still you can't have everything.

I installed the tach myself, thanks to wiring instructions courtesy of Whitt. very pleased with look, price, etc. I mounted mine on the handlebar, a little right of center, so you still get a lear view of the speedo. I still have the wiring instructions if you need them. see previous posts for pics and more info.

How was it to wire up the external tach? I'd really love to get one of those drag specialties tachs (the stock one sucks, as I said) but I'm curious as to how much of a bolt-on it really is.

Here's a shot of mine. If you already have the wiring for it, it truly is a snap. Just wire up some connectors so you can still remove the "dashboard" if you want. It took me like an hour just to swap out the little wiring harness that connects to all the dash lights, after that it was a snap!

Special thanks to Steve Sixmill!! Without that wiring harness, it woulda been an interesting job trying to hook up to the coil!!

I didn't use the handlebar mount. I bent a small piece of aluminum and then just screwed it to the bracket on the back of the tach, no problem. Looks pretty good, altho someday when I get better with my metal working/polishing skills, I may do it up differently. Cleaner.

Okay, after reading the replies here, I bought a tach for my '05 TBA and I want to install it. Under the dash I have three sets of wires ending in plugs: 1) orange wire, grey wire; 2) red wire, green with thin red stripe wire; 3) purple wire, brown wire, red with thin blue stripe wire.

The tach ends with 4 loose wires... I am guessing that I want the plug with 3 wires, but what am I doing with the 4th loose wire from the tach? Does anybody have a wiring diagram that explains what I am looking at and what I want?

I just bought the tach and console off ebay and have the same question. My bike is an 03 and I have the same wiring as panda42, but no other wiring came with the tach and the plugs do not fit into the tach. What else is required to connect it? Is the light powered through the three prongs in the tach? or is it separate? Also, there is a hole in the bottom of the tach, is that for a light bulb? There are some complications when you're a cheapskate

Ladinsay, I'd have to see a pic of yours to know what you are in for, but panda should have it easy.

The red wire is the coil wire.
The green w/red stripe is the hot (TWO wires from the tach go to it)
and the brown is the ground. Check the wiring diagram that came with the tach (assuming you got the DS one I did) and I think you should have it.

I guess the problem is that all I got was the tach itself off of eBay. No additional wiring, no instructions and no wiring diagram. The underside of the tach has an inset three prong male plug and I have a two prong female plug with the Red wire and the Green/Red wire floating around inside the console. I've never seen the tach hooked up so I'm not sure what to look for. Funny that none of the wiring diagrams include the tach. The other two plugs are identified as going to the Triumph alarm system LED and to the clock. I thought there would be a plug in there that would simply attach to the tach, t'aint so.

I just talked to Kevin at Baxter Cycle in Marne Iowa. As I suspected, there is a separate subharness required to install the tach. He's going to try to get a set of installation instructions for me so I can rig one.

That's weird. As long as you have that red wire coming up under the console somewhere, you are in business man. Just figure out which prong it goes to on the tach etc and you're good.

I have the red and the green/red together in the two prong male connector. Then I have the three prong male connector terminal on the tach. I tried holding them together but I got the feeling that they just wouldn't do that. Since I don't even have the installation instructions I'll get that first and then either buy or fabricate a mini harness to make it work. If anyone has the installation instructions for the tach I'd appreciate it.

The trick is figuring out which prong coming off the tach is which. One should go to the coil/red wire, one should go to ground (brown), and another should go to the green/red which is the hot wire. Hope that helps!

I got your email with the installation instructions. Thanks, now I see the problem. I'm missing the little wiring harness attached to the tach itself. On page 1 of the instructions showing items 1 through 7 you see it attached to item 1, the tach.

is there no wire at all??? if there are stubs with some color I may be able to pull my dash apart in the next day or so...it's going to ...RAIN here AGAIN so a little down time might be on it's way, then I can try to see where they go, by color..

No wires at all, just three little male connectors on the back of the tach. If you can tell me what color the wires are, and what order they are in at each end, I think I can fabricate one. Maybe a photo would be easiest. Thanks, I owe you one.
