Here in the peoples demokratic republik of Kalifornia, proper use of a turn signal is considered a challenge to block you from what you want to do. If signals are used at all, the trick is to use them as a diversion. So, if you are going to change lanes to the left, you turn on your right signal and, when everyone is crowding up on the right, you will have plenty of room on the left. Another trick is to turn on the left blinkers some 10 miles in advance. Then, they assume you just forgot to turn them off and relax so that you can sometimes sneak over before they realise you really did intend to shift to the left.
