Can anyone tell me anything about this place? I like the NM motorcycle laws, cost of lifing and crime rate indexes look good, but would anyone want to live there if they could help it?

http://realestate.yahoo.com/Neighborhoods/detail.html?csz=Portales,NM Found the above link. Looks like the folks are poor, lots of kits, education is cheap, more college the national average and the polution is high :-) anyhow the demographic on the link is an overview.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

Nope !!! I used to go there twice a week as a Truck driver so I probably have a worse prospective than a person would have if they went as a tourist we usually see the worst side of cities/towns and the folks that live there. as I typed this I got to thinking you might enjoy it better than where you now live it is a lot slower pace, good riding in the area, scenic roads, quiet lifestyle, It is just not my area of choice. If you move there you will definitely miss the L.A. weather. Good luck making your decision I know how hard it is to change. After 25 years of being self employed am going to work for the county next month am moving to the Kansas City area (if I don't change my mind) Making this decision has been a real roller coaster I think I remember you saying something about medical services in a previous post, If you think this is needed check it out, this is the major reason I chose to move to a metro area

Portales, NM ....suburb of beautiful Clovis, NM ...green bean capitol of N.M. .......Don't look for trees,,, there are not any.......Nice town but personally prefer Las Vegas, NM .. Carlsbad, NM and the always quirky Roswell !! Portales is this much,,,, it is better than any big city except some town like Tulsa...which is truly a gem. P.S. Taos is not bad either....if you can take the winters. but that goes for any of the North location towns in the state.

GB....if you have any doubts about moving then I suggest this. Tuesday morning(any Tuesday morning will do). Pack up a change in shorts, shirt, ect. Gas up and head north on 101 to then the 1. Spend night in Monterey or Salinas. Wake up, shower, big breakfast. Gas up. Ride down 101 all the way home. My guess you won't to leave SoCal. Just a suggestion.

I have lived in N.M. (Albuquerque) for 46 years now and have never been to Portales but do know it's more desert terrain than the northern part of the state which is more mountains and much more scenic. The weather is generaly pretty good and not much snow. I would never leave New Mexico just for the reason of the green chili !!!! Buuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrppppppppppp !!!!!!!!

Thanks all. I took a look at Farmington too, and it seems to have more snow and gas is $0.25 more. One of the things about Portales is that I can get a better house than I have now, on a very big lot, with a bigger garage, a horse barn and a workshop for about half the price of the one I'm in now.

If you are looking for property look into Los Lunas, Algodones, Bernalillo & Placitas.

My wife and I considered NM, AZ and TX and have pretty much decided on the Austin, TX area. Housing is really reasonable compared to the left coast and the weather permits year round riding. It's also less expensive than NM and the job market looks better. I have family in Farmington...too cold in the winter. Las Cruces was appealing, and of course there's always Taos, but the cost of housing is high and the winters cold. I want to move somewhere I can pay cash for a nice place and relax for a change.

Were in Kitsap county are you? My wife and I were discussing moving to WA for the same reason you want to leave. Housing prices in the northeast are unreal. Also it might rain less out there.

GB... To add,,, I love N.M. but I was born and have family from West Tx (not the panhandle..real West TX) but here in Northwest, AR... the riding is 12mo...weather mild (not much if any snow) cost of living is low, great riding roads, a real motorcycle environment and with Wal-Mart headquartered in the area,,,many jobs..in fact the area is litterally booming...lots of employment opportunities... a 2000ft2 house and a little acreage for around 100K to 120K Just a thought.
