It's a little thing, but is driving me nuts. When I was a youngster, I had a Velocette, and then a Triumph. One of those had a brass number plate and a pointer on the right side of the gearbox to tell you what gear you were in (bloody awkward to see when riding!) but I can't remember which. Anyone have one or remember which it was?

I remember a Triumph 250 that had that. It never occurred to me that it was worthless when you were riding. Long time ago.

Greybeard,
I remember seeing something like that for sale on eBay or somewhere.
I did a Google on Triumph gear indicator and found this at Rask Cycle....

3TA's and 5TA's had these, did'nt know about the 250,but they where totally useless,to see them you'd have to lift your right leg, lean out to the right, take about 10 seconds to see what gear you're in then swerve to avoid the approaching tram, bus, lorry etc...By the way, which Velocette did you have,I had a Velocette Valient,I think it was in 73,a little boxer twin

Thanks everyone, now I can sleep.
The Velocette I had was a '54 500CC single. I can't remember the model name. It had the big humpback tank like the Thruxton but a flat bench seat instead of the racing style one that was on the Thruxton. That was an amazing bike once I learned how to start it.
As for the gear indicator, I guess it was rather like a really bad gift, it's the thought that counts. The only time I used it was to make sure it was in top gear whilst tuning the engine. It was a lot easier to turn the crank to the right spot with the rear wheel than with the kicker when adjusting valves or the magneto points.

My '71 Daytona had that little jewel of a pointer.
Any landing you can walk away from is a good one.

as does a '73. Want I should take a picture of it for you for the old scrapbook Ed? Actually I can recall taking a glance down there a time or two while on the open highway, um just to make sure I didn't have just ONE more gear to use, lol. Know how many times I pulled in that clutch and tried to toe that lever up? ****** that bike needs a fifth.
