One problem of how many miles to a tank is how full each person fills their tank. When I hit reserve I rarely put more than 3.5 gallons in. The tank is listed as 4.4 gallons total of which .9 is reserve. If you're putting in over 4 gallons just after hitting reserve, you're probably filling above the intended stop point which could easily account for an extra 30 miles or more.

Mileage comparisons do work if the person is always filling to the same point. Total mileage per tank obviously has faults. Also, I know my odometer is off, I wonder how much + or - they can be creating another comparison problem.
