Funny thing, Doug, he seldom liked talking about it.
He was of the mind, similarly to Steven Ambrose's contention of the "Citizen Soldier" in his writings, that he had an very unpleasant and very non-glamorous job to perform, and he did it, wasn't "proud" of it, and would sooner forget it.
And thus, I received very little information while going up about his war experiences.
But you're right, my friend! He WAS a PROUD AMERICAN and I think, a better than average human being! And....a pretty good role model, to boot.
