Went to look at a Lucifer Orange and Aluminium Silver Anniversary edition T100 this weekend. Noted a leaking external pushrod cover tube with only 2500 miles on the bike. Hell, if I wanted another leaking pushrod cover tube, I'd buy another old Triumph.

Did a quick scan of the gallery, but found no close-ups of the forward part of the cylinder between the exhausts. Does the BA or SM have these external tubes? If so, what's your experience with oil leaking from them?

Regards,

Our motors don't use pushrods. Our speedys and americas have dual overhead cams, operating via a shim over bucket design for valve actuation, which drives the valves.

That chrome tube between the engine exhaust headers is called an air tube part number T1161000.

like the old Triumph's Exhaust Coupling Pipe part number 70-9888; I was worried your bike might have a piece like the old Triumph's Push Rod Cover Tube part number 71-3329, to mimic the look of the old Triumph. Maybe routing oil to the head or something. There is one on the Hinkley T100 I looked at and it was leaking.

I'm glad this is not the case for the BA and SM, as changing the two rubber Sealing Ring part number 70-4752 every few thousand miles on my bike, is a real pain in the A$$.

Thank You

Green arrows point to the chrome pipe that mimic a Push Rod Tube (I understand the new T100's are DOHC). It had dried oil around the base where it connects into the engine case.

The America , Speedmaster , Bonneville and Thruxton all have that tube. As they all have the same engine cases.
It allows oil to drain down from the head and helps equalize any air pressure differnce between the head and the crankcase.
I have over 11k on my bike and never had a leak I did not cause.
These bikes are very reliable and do not have the demons( lucas or oil leaks) the older bikes had.
It may not be oil.
The bikes shipped from triumph have way to much cosmoleen(sp?) on some of the parts.
I had a hell of a time getting it all off my Daytona.

I agree with snekeptp, the cosmoleen is everywhere and many people mistake it for oil leaks. I was fouled by the cosmoleen when I first got the bike. My dealer didn't do a good job of prep and I had cosmoleen dripping down the sides of the cam cover and primary cover. I haven't had any leaks at all.

my 78 leaked there. $130 for a 50 cent seal. my 2002 doesn't leak at all. the area at the bottom of the 'push rod tube' does collect a lot of road debri tho...

Thanks all. Appreciate the assurance. Don't want to deal with a "similar" design flaw again.

Now it's just a matter of finding a used SM or BA for sale at a fair price with a touch of warranty <= 150 miles away.

My recent T100 inspection helped me decide to buy a SM or BA (thought the T100 was to small at 6'1'/225lbs), but I'm still having trouble picking one or the other (no, can't afford both with two kids in college). Luckily, I'm a patient old guy.

Regards,

Ive looked at my T100 many times with me sitting on it and it isnt small at all, looks alot like the old actors riding Triumphs in the old days (James Dean, Steve McQueen) and Im 6'2".

Now my Harley FLH dwarfs my T100, but the more I look at my Harley its kindof like an overgrown motorcycle.

BP,

I'll agree. A 6'2" guy doesn't make the T100 look small. Take a look at this guy

This guy just looks stupid.

cosmolene

Hi cat,

Still looking. The Meriden I have in the garage has coagulated goop (cosmolene?) all over the underside. Your Red/Black SM would do nicely. I see Triumphbob has a similar one for sale in the classifieds. Price looks good, but shipping or plane ticket to NC for the ride up, pushes it beyond what I want to pay. People are selling Hinckley T100's locally (<150 miles), so I'm hoping a decent used BA or SM will show at a fair price.

Keeping an eye open at Clinton for a trade-in, don't want to pay what they're asking for a new bike out the door.

Regards

Beanache,

Tell us about all the wrestling records you broke in college...and about your favorite move, the groin hold! Beanache often fantasizes about the "glory days" and how much he enjoyed the sport of wrestling, rolling around on the floor in skimpy clothes with other men sweating all over him. Its at that point in our conversation that I get a little sick and walk out before he goes into any greater "details".

If you think thats bad you should hear him when he talks about the locker room, UGH!
