While putting the zip-tie on the rubber fender mount, I inspected my speedo cable closely and there's no damage to it. My bike's an '05 SM, and there is a plastic "figure 8-shaped connector" that holds the speedometer cable to one of the brake lines. It's a little above the midpoint of the cable. I don't know if this little connector is on the earlier models, but on my bike it seems to prevent the speedo cable from coming close to the header pipes. I checked the cable throughout the range of handlebar positions, and it never even came close to the headers. Maybe (if the connector isn't on earlier models) Triumph realized that the fender-mounted cable loop wasn't working very well and put this clamp on as a second-level protection?
