I'm about to place the order for my SM. I've been on here a while & have read & gotten some great advice but I wanted to get a general opinion.
Ok EVERYONE says to remove the AI to prevent blue-ing of the pipes. My question is this... how quickly will this happen? I was thinkin about leaving the bike 100% stock until after the 500 mile adjust. For a few different reasons but I was just at a dealer & saw the start of blue-ing on a Thruxton with under 30miles on it! Is this what I have to look forward to? Or could it be that the Thruxton runs hotter exahust due to it RPM's?
Just wondering? I mean in the long run I'd prolly be replacing all the pipes with more than slip-ons but would like to maybe keep the bike pretty much stock for this season & then do all the craziness over the winter (one good thing about livin here... ya can always do yer tweaks off season & come ride time you'll have a "new" bike per se)
Either way just interested in hearin what others have dealt with... Thnx again!

Even though our header pipes have heat shields they will turn blue/gold fairly quickly. Mine started with about 200 miles on the clock.
Used blue away to clean up the pipes after installing the AI removal kit from NewSpeedmaster.com There are other products that will clean them up as well.
Check the Tech Vault for the air mixture screw adjustment procedure as well. This will cure the dreaded "lean mixture" problem that our bikes have from the factory.

Well at least there's the polishing... so I guess it's not that bad. I gotta admit when I saw the Thruxton w/ the blued pipes I was concerned... thnx!

I can't think of a single reason, what is your's? My AI went off before the 1 mile mark. Even so, I did get a little gold discoloration on one pipe until I synch'd the carbs. The dealer could install the AI kit prior to pick-up for very little beyond the price of the actual kit.
Just my 2 zloty.

My a1 has not been removed, I have over 5000 miles in one year with NO discoloration, I know i should remove it but I'm from the old school that says if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Well my only concerns I guess where basically with any chance of voiding any part of the warranty of any kind mainly & then the other would be I want to be deliberate about what I do..... need more time to check who's done what & what it is I want to do... I know the chances of me doin "one" change & being 100% happy with it might not happen but I don't want to be swaping things out or dealing with trial & error... I'd rather be speding more time on the road than in the garage. Especially given the limited amount of seriuosly good weather here...

As far as the warranty is concerned, it would be a dealer call. Most of them are smart enough to realize that AI removal won't do anything bad to the engine and probably will increase the life of the exhaust valves and pipes. So, you might talk to them about it just to be sure.

My pipes were horribly blue/black/gold after 2000 miles(before I found this site, and had the AI removed). After 6 plus hours plus of polishing w/a 4" cotton wheel in my cordless drill with Totally Buff, I got it off. Check out posts under exhaust(also see my photo posts).

I just went last night & put the $$ down & am now anxiously waiting delivery of my NEW 2006 SM (dealer said 2wks or less, let's hope!!)
But I found out that this deal removes the AI (as the guy put "all that enviromental crap")..... So I should be all good!!!
Anyone on this thang from the Chicago-land area?

2 weeks? For crying out loud, there are three of them here on the floor at my dealer.

I had not even hit 250 miles on my new 06 TBA and to no avail, there is some damned blue and purple showing already. It's up under the sleeve, but it already started. The AI's are coming off this weekend and modified stocks are going on. I hope it stops the blues from invading my putt! We'll see. I will keep y'all posted.

Something that is often forgotten is that polishing discoloured pipes takes off a bit of the plating. Enough bluing and de-bluing and the chrome will be gone completely.

Old school here. Blue pipes to me mean alot of miles traveled. Got to get the engine hot to blue the pipes. To get the engine hot got to ride alot of miles. Blue pipes= monkey butt rider.

My left pipe has been blueing since day one. I removed the AI at 23 miles and it did absolutely no good. The pipe is now dark blue while the right side is perfect.
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger......and then it hit me.

Did you adjust your air mixture screws and balance your carbs?

He might have it stored away in a box out back. The 2 weeks is to give you time to plan the longest possible ride home. So, start planning, you'll be glad you did.

The best thing I found was this stuff called "Boms away".
I put a little squirt on the polishing wheel and 2 minutes later blue and gold was gone. I also did my levers and front fork shrouds and it shined it up to a all most chrome like finish. When I ordered I also got "the Bom" which is a bike polish which was pretty great too, cut my cleaning time in half. All together both products cost about $40 plus shipping. Their web site is Boms Away
