Has anyone had to pass a smog test yet? I was wondering how it went with the AI removed and other mods.

Well...We get to go for five years from new until we have to worry about it.

Hi DanB. Good to see another Arizonan on board

Yep, I have until Dec 08 before I have to get one. I was curious if anyone else had to do it before me. I used to post quite a bit on the old board but got out of the habit when they switched to the new format. I don't get to ride much I'm sorry to say (only 6800 miles in 2 years) but I enjoy it when I can.

For whatever reason, we don't have to do that here, at least not yet.

Only 2 places in the US I've heard of that requires smog testing for motorcycles are parts of Pima and Maricopa counties in Arizona. Since the first year for Bonneville Americas was 2002, and few Arizonans post here, you won't see a smog test happen until probably 2008(June). I'll let you know then. That's IF I even have to go through it. A law has been passed expempting motorcycles, and some other vvehicles in Pima County, but it still has to get by the EPA.

I just did a search and found that CA is developing technology to test motorcycles. The projected date is 04/01/07.

Your yellow Speedy will only fail the equipment portion of the smog test IF the inspector at the smog station realizes that said parts have been removed.

And, you can always dummy up the AI set up.

Remember though, that the AI injects raw air into the exhaust stream, creating an afterburner like situation, which cleans up the exhaust readings. Your sans-AI readings may not be low enough to pass. (I know you know this stuff, since you teach it, but I thought I'd say if for the benefit of those not familiar with AI systems.)

Hmm, a perfect situation to use Nology coils and side-'n'-wide gapped plugs. Also, by the time you need to test, maybe Brent will have in stock, an HP ignition box for the 270º motor. These mods should easily bring your smog numbers back to test-passing levels, especially if we bump that gap out to .060" or more!

At least by then, your area out there will be so built up that they'll have to build another smog testing station, and you won't have to come all the way into Surprise to test.

When I had my Triumph off roads installed and re-jetted at the dealer in Mesa(now on Arizona Ave down in Chandler) almost 3 years ago, they hooked up a sniffer to it and said it would have no problem passing emissions. Setup at the time for the bike was AI removed, snorkel removed, Unifilter, and 135 mains with 45 pilots.

I think you are right about that Papa. And I doubt the emissions guys would know one way or the other.

Derek will be first up for this if and when it happens. So if he passes (it it comes to that) I should as well.

In that case, I guess I'd better think about either moving or trading the America off on a 650 old enough to be exempt. Hmm, wonder how hard it would be to adapt the 800 engine into a 650 frame????
