I just got my new 06 TBA. Silver. Love it. (I can't believe I am even on my PC right now) anyways...
It is very nice to know there are folks here helpin out each other.
During my research of exhaust replacement, in order to put some nuts under the bike, I found info scattered about the forum.
I thought it would be helpful if there was a "Place to start for Exhaust Facts" thread that would have THE BASIC FACTS about replacement. I know it will help Newbies like Me..

For instance.
1. What is the name for the stock pipes? (I got a little confused when browsing around and still am not clear when they are talked about or not.)
2. Does replacing void the warranty? (I asked the dealer and they told me that they would never report it. So it wouldn't matter)
3. What is ALL done in the process of changing out your pipes? I.E. Change pipes and rejet? What else? Carbs?
4. If the replacement kit you choose comes with new jets and needed hardware, do you have to take it in and have the bike put on a dyno after your done? Or are you "matched"?
5. Slip on Exhaust or do you replace from the header?

Etc. Etc.

It seems that it would be helpful to have this Exhaust 101 for dummies thread.
Thanx for all the great info Y'all.

2- No
3- Swap Pipes, Re-jet if neccesary
4- Only if want to
5- Slip on pipes for sure

Most vendors seem to know what jets you will need for your pipe/bike setup and altitude. It appears their recommendations are pretty solid. "Dinqua" also has a jetting calculator tool that works well.
I think rejetting benefits most exhausts except for the "Thunderbike" system.
Specialty Spares supplied jets with my exhaust and the bike runs like a champ.
No one currently makes replacement headers for our bikes.
Congrat's on the new bike and welcome! I'm anxious to see a silver TBA in person.

The jets that come with most kits are usually pretty close to what is needed. These guys do their homework because there is a good bit of competition and they also happen to enjoy making bikes run right. Some, such as Thunderbike, are designed to not need rejetting except to fine tune for other mods.
Once the exhaust system is less restricted, you can gain another 3 to 5 HP by taking the rubber bits out of the airbox and maybe drilling through the bottom of the filter and airbox. This has been covered in several other threads, so do a search for snorkles to get the details. Or, there is a kit available called the Freak that completely eliminates the airbox and gains you some 8 to 12 HP.

Excellent info.
From what clips I've got to listen to, I think I'm going with the Epco's and remove th AI's. If I ever find the darn things. lol
After the wife comes down from the new putt, I'll try to squeeze in the Freak. well SHHHhhh.... after I get the sissy bar too.

After some snorkeling around, It sure seems like The airbox modifying is a great inexpensive way to go.
I will be trying that in the future and will pass on my info.
I just pulled the one snorkel out and noticed a difference. Wow...

I would definitley consider some kind of airbox mod if you install new pipes and rejet. That honey is gonna want alot more air!

Welcome and Enjoy!

I just wondered if I could do the full air mod without adjusting the carbs before i do the new exhaust. I don't want to pull carb twice. Or have to sit and wait untill I can get the Pipes because I'm all "out of tune" from the full air mod.

If you're just going to pull out the snorkles and maybe drill the bottom of the airbox and filter, you should be able to do it without rejetting. If it does go a little too lean with the drilling, you can just drop in a bit of pasteboard to block the holes untill you get the pipes. You won't see much of a power gain with the stock pipes though because you need to get more air out to make room for more to get in.

As for the Epco pipes, I got a set when the only alternative was about twice the price. They work well and sound nice. I think they are still probably the best value for the price.

Excellent!! Thanx, I went in and found there were no snorkels inside so now I'm saving for pipes! Runs fine too.

I've got the Bub's, and I like the way they sound compared to anything else I've heard, live or sound bites. The performance increase is quite noticable.

My bike's at the dealer now, getting a waranteed air box replacement(it exploded on backfire before I had the AI removed). I also have him putting in 45 Pilots, and 130 mains(had 40/125 I think) per Dinqua's jetting chart thingy.

When I get it back I'll try:
Removing snorkle-ride it
Putting in UNI Filter-ride it
Drilling box/filter bottom-ride it

Will post my results.

I stopped by my boat service dealer this afternoon, and they haven't even taken the shrink wrap off yet. Looks like it's gonna be a bike weekend.

Oh well.

Charlie
