In Dr. Who last night, a young reporter was listing incidents that were causing locals to believe that a local nuclear powerplant project was cursed. The person she was interviewing was an alien disguized as the mayor. The aliens plot was to cause the plant to go into meltdown in order to open a recently closed time/space rift, generating enough energy to get the alien away to some other planet and destroying the earth. One of the incidents was the unexplained death of the EU inspection team. The alien dismissed it by saying, "But, they were French."
Let's hope there's intelligent life somewhere in space 'cause it's buggar all down here. -- Monte Python

I spent a week in provance and the people were great and I can't wait to go back. I spent one night in Paris and swore I would never go back. Funny thing about it, it was the Americans that bugged the hell out of me. I can see why people don't care for american tourist.
I overheard the following.
"I don't understand why these people don't speak english." "I'm hungry, didn't we pass a McDonalds" "Thank god, they have budweiser here."

If I'm not mistaken, most of the world hates us.

Fun game to play in Paris. See how much a crepe costs by Notre Dame. Then see how much one costs somewhere off the beaten path, like Le Gardin De Luxembourg. They may complain about us tourists (and I have heard the same annoying things there too) but they make their money off us too I admit to eating at MacD's in Paris when I was 16, but in my defense, my friend and I were trying to spend as much time as possible seeing things, not eating! AND I NEVER expected anyone to speak english to me.

It's like being the rich kid in school , the only ones who like you are the ones that get to hang with you, or benefit from you, the rest are jealous and make up all kinds of reasons not to like you. Oh Well!!

that just goes to show you what a load of crap polls are. I've NEVER had anything but good experiences in the German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria and France) and spent more than my fair share there on business trips (where I mix in as much fun as absolutlely possible mixing with the locals and staying clear of tourist spots), and have many good friends in Germany in a relatively short amount of time (which goes against "common knowledge" since Germans are supposed to be cold, arrogant and difficult to befriend, all NOT true!) Even have some French friends, sacré Bleu! Yes, I have run into one or two, but I can say the same amount of jerks as I would run into just visiting my local Wal-Mart. As for tourist spots, I suspect that much like the restaurant where my wife works, after dealing with a general public (Mert can chime in here too!) where basic manners seem to be an absolutely non-existent and foreign concept (why do many people seem to turn into absolute cretins when being waited on by someone at a restaurant?)! Many people who work day in and day out in these tourist hotspots probably become somewhat "anti-social" from constantly being told "bring me this", "do that", without so much as a please, or dealing with tourists who complain non-stop that it isn't what they wanted, or isn't as good or like it is at home (then stay the hell home!). I know my wife puts up with this same mentality day in and day out from people (some church groups are the worst offenders and should be ashamed to be affiliated with a church, because the Golden Rule is somewhat tarnished after their visit!), and there are some days she has to almost bite her tongue off to keep from telling off some spoiled 14 year old princess who has just barked at her "Yo, bring me some more coke!"(with the girls parents right there at the table!), or someone bitching because their food was cold (even though they ate the whole thing and never complained once during the four or five times my wife came to check up on them!) Sorry, I don't put the blame on the French or Germans, I put the blame or about 75% of it on the tourists who wear their welcome thin.
Oh, and just to be fair, I have seen this same behavior here in the states when a foreign visitor has a hard time understanding our customs or rules, or speaking our language.

Everyone in west Germany was super friendly and open. The ones in east Germany were friendly but not very open. I can understand it, after all the communist had people spying on thier neighbors just a few years ago.

So all the less than politically correct French (spit) bashing that has/does go on around these parts is actually something that has a basis in "FACT"

So it seems. I am just not used to seeing it being done with such total abandon...not to mention outright glee.
Refreshing.
