Looks like maybe when we are paying tax levels commonly seen in Europe and other parts of the world. Hey, what the heck, I just work for the fun of it anyhow.
Just an observation. I just noticed how quiet the "moderate" Mrs. Clinton has been in this debate.

O.K. I'm heading to Canada for a few months, attain my citizenship, then sneak back across the border here. Get caught, pay my $750.00 fine, send the kids to school, take care of some medical issues I've been putting off, and ask the State to help feed me and the kids, move into section 8 housing. I figure I can make a pretty good living mowing lawns and such if I don't have to give 1/3 of my check to the tax man, pay full price for housing, have most of my food purchased for me, and get free medical. Yep I'm going to work on my accent now.

Sorry Dave! I can't answer ANY o' those "Canuck-ian" questions!(how's THAT for word-coinage, huh?!) BUT, I CAN do a great version of Gordon Lightfoot's "Carefree Highway" AND "Sundown"!!! I follow this closely because I live in California. I don't know if those of you who aren't in a southern border state realize how bad it can get. It's bad in California already, and the country as a whole is looking at maybe seventy million more immigrants in the next ten years, most of them from Mexico, if Bush and the Senate get their way. If you do the math and add up all the little parts of the Senate bill that they're not telling you about, as it stands so far, that's what is likely to happen. That's too many people. And our immigrants should come from all over the world, not just Mexico. Bush and most of the Senate seem to be out of their minds on this thing.
The House of Representatives could still stop them, and it seems it may be inclined to do so, however, this is by no means certain. Now would a really good time for everybody to email or phone their congressmen every couple of days and tell them in no uncertain terms that if they let the Senate's insane citizenship giveaway become law they will all be voted out of office at the next available opportunity, which, for many of them, would be November. Actually, your congressmen often do pay attention to you, especially if you speak their language, like this: (1) you tell them exactly what you want them to do, and (2) you tell them you'll fire them if they don't.

Well, it's really not necessary. After all, English, according to the current Administration, is NOT the official language of the US, nor should it be. In a recent quote by President Bush, where he was being asked about a statement by Alberto Gonzales (current US Attorney General), English should not be the, nor is, the "Official" language of the United States, it is simply the "unifying" language! Boy, if he is not pandering to the Hispanic vote with that kind of nonsense, I don't know how he would. French is the official language of their country, Switzerland has 4, High German is the official language of Germany, etc, etc..., etc... For all the bashing of socialist countries, they seem at least to know their priorities when it comes to immigration and border control. You sneak into France or Germany and are caught, you are jailed and deported, period. No niceties about social security benefits, drivers licenses, etc... And this nonsense that if an immigrant (legal or illegal) has their baby on US soil being an instant citizen, what the heck? Maybe dual citizen, but not instant US. Shoot, there are Turkish families in Germany whose parents and grandparents came to Germany after WW2 to fill the labor shortage, whose kids TODAY are not citizens. A bit extreme, and yes it is causing social unrest as has been seen in France recently, but we should be somewhere in the middle.

That would require a constitutional amendment to modify the fourteenth amendment of the constitution. And maybe it's time, since that amendment was put in to guarantee that the freed slaves who were born in the U.S. would be citizens. I think the reason for the amendment has been rendered moot by time, and needs to be reviewed. Of course our constitution also prohibits ex post facto laws, so those who qualify under the constitution before any amendment takes effect would still be citizens.

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Just wrote my Rep. telling him of MY opinion and that I would watch the role call of YEA/NA if I should see his name on the YEA side I would vote for his opponent regardless of the political affiliation...
Also wrote to both my Sen. thanking them for their support of SA3985 (Ensign Amendment)...and that I would remember that at the polls

Then be sure to let them know what you think of their position! JUST REMEMBER A YEA VOTE IS VOTEING TO GIVE THEM SOCIAL SECURITY!!! IF Your SEN voted YEA He/She just took another piece of your pie! The vote was to TABLE the Amendment NOT to SUPPORT it!!!

If they voted nay to table the bill doesnt that mean that they wanted it move forward making them not elligible for benefits?
I think a nay is a good thing. If you table it, generally speaking it never gets to law meaning those who voted Yea wanted the illegals to get benefits.
Am I reading it wrong maybe?

No if they table the amendment (which dis-allowed benefits for illegles) then they have effectivly allowed the benefits.
A yea vote is leaving the current provisions which allow for illegals TO collect, EVEN on those monies they contributed while they were here illegaly...the amendment they tabled (disallowed) would have excluded any monies they earned while they were using forged documents, stolen ID, or false SOC #s, or were not documented, (Illegal aliens)

So a nay vote was the good vote of those not wanting those who did fraud to get the benefits. nay= no benefits yeh= benefits.
So if you are against the benefits being paid then those who voted yeh need the nasty email note.
Okay, I think I got it. My folks in Texas voted nay. Can't figure why, we have no illegals in Texas do we?

Recently it has been noticed that the amendment says "and subject to the jurisdiction thereof." Freed slaves were certainly subject to the jurisdiction thereof. But just anybody who manages to sneak into the country without the government's knowledge or permission and then have a baby is not necessarily under the jurisdiction thereof. The law has been interpreted to mean that any child born under any circumstances here is automatically a citizen, but that is only an interpretation. The Court could change the interpretation without changing the law. Whatever. It didn't matter so much in the past, but it is probably time to close this loophole.

i was absolutely thrilled the other day when the house and senate passed the bill to make english the official language of the usa. i said something at work and the manager said to be careful about creating a HR problem. folks, i was born here and it is my loud god given american right to say i am not speaking spanish! they can kiss my ---.
