Just as an overview, I am generally a pretty good defensive driver. I have driven all types of vehicles including semis. I obey traffic laws, I personally think that the 75mph speed limit is plenty here in OK. on the toll roads. But here it is. There is this guy who I sometimes work with that just bought a brand new 883 Harley Roadster. I believe it is his first bike. This guy is good ole OK boy who is somewhat full of crap an likes to brag. I try to be nice and even told him where to get some reasonably priced saddle bags and leathers, he is buying in to the whole Harley philosphy, whatever that is. He came to my building for a meeting in his new leather vest and told me his bike was here and I could look at it. Jee...like I feel so priveledged to look at another Harley . Anyway he says in so many words that he thinks his bike is faster than mine. I told him any place anytime. Then he gets a little doubtful and says you really think you could beat me, how many CC's is your bike. I said just 790. He said why do you think you can beat me? I told him I'm raced a couple of bigger Harley's and I just know how many hp I have and how many you have. I really would like to put him in his place and it is soooo tempting, but should I just continue to taunt him or meet him on a rural road and put him in his place. I already told him he was riding the girls Harley. He's had it it maybe two weeks and is already talking about buying a bigger one. Maybe I should be the bigger person and just smile at him. That would definetly be the more sensible thing to do. Oh... but how I would love to see the look on his face after I tromp him.

Sounds like you've already got him "with that look on his face" and he's already questioning his choice...run with that...

Pes,

I wouldn't race him for another reason.
Being a new rider and lacking experience, there is a chance he will end up seeing his a$$ without a mirror if he races you (and crashes).

I've done it and don't race newbies for any reason whatsoever anymore, no matter how irritating one may be.

Heed the wise words of Rob & Bedouin. Beating a newbie on an 883 aint gonna make you proud.

Come on Pes, let him "think", his 883 Hardly will out do a 790 Triumph, no need to upset the guy

Sounds like the guy has an underdeveloped manhood problem but still has the pathetic urge to whip it out and pee in public every chance he gets. Tell him that he's probably right, and that his stock Harley "entry level" 883 is waaaaaay more motorcycle than you could possibly ever aspire to own and that "you just don't see too many of those" around.

Then give him a big ol' wink, mention "Brokeback Mountain" under your breath, and walk away chuckling softly and shaking your head.

I'm not going to say race him or not. But, it sure is tough to resist such a challenge (for me anyway), especially since our bikes can blow him away easily.

Last Spring I got into an impromptu drag race (stop light to stop light) with a guy in a 1200 Sporty and beat him 2 out of three lights. That was before I did any mods to my bike at all (except AI removal).

I own a 2004 883 Sportster with several performance mods. When I decided it was a bit cramped riding with my wife, I tried trading it in and getting a bigger Harley - but even the Harley dealer didn't seem to want it. Then I found out that Triumph was back in business. I always had a soft spot for Triumphs. I bought a Speedmaster (which is dimensionally about the same as a Softail) for far less than it would have cost me to trade the Sporty in. I now own both a Sporty and the Triumph. The Speedmaster is far quicker, handles far better, is far smoother, etc. Yeh, there's a part of me that still likes the Harley, but bike for bike, there's no comparison. Don't risk your bike - it ain't worth it. If you want to blow him away, have him stradle his bike and just tip it up off the stand, then have him stradle your bike and do the same - it's that top heaviness H-Ds drivers are fighting all the time they're riding.

So, there y'are, PES. You and your Triumph are "better balanced" than both the wanker and his silly little "starter Harley."

Tell him he has a "really cute little Harley," and then ask him what he did with the training wheels when he took them off. As a capper, mention that you had seem a "Modern Marvels" segment on the history channel about how Harley originally introduced the 883 to try and gain market share with women riders, but they soon found that women preferred something with a little more "oomph" behind it, so they developed the 1200 to better compete with other bikes like the Triumph.

Go get a barrel, a pistol, water, and fish. Fill barrel with water and fish. Shoot into barrel.

Should be about the same thing as racing this guy.

Tell the dude that he should spinkle cow manure on his bike, water it 2 times a week, & maybe it will grow up to be something that can compete with your Triumph.

That ought to get his wallet (chained, of course) out !!!

Sure. Just be careful to stay just a little bit ahead of him and nobody will even notice that you are racing.

The fact that you have him second guessing is victory enough. Don't risk him getting hurt. OR! Of you do race him, you win, he walks away, he WILL go buy WAY MORe bike than he can handle and THEN kill himself.

ATTENTION "HARLEY HUGGERS"...

My repartee advice to PEZ is not intended as a slam against Harleys. I happen to think Harley Davidson makes a very nice line of motorcycles. I never wanted to own one (Well, maybe the Nightrider, or whatever the H it's called.), but that doesn't mean I have anything particular against them. My remarks are instead intended toward the wanker (ANY wanker)on the starter bike who immediately thinks that because they own a "Harley," they are big, bad, and "dangerous." "Ptooey to them," I say. I spit in their general direction.

The same might be said of those who own any particular brand - including ours. While the Triumph SM and BA are undoubtedley of superior quality and heritage, none of "us" are responsible for their design or manufacture. We bought what was sold, clear and simple, and neither the BA nor the SM are "racers" either. They are "classic cruisers." Now if someone wanted to "cruise" against me for a pink slip, I say, "Bring em on, brutha (or sista)."

My bike doesn't define who I am, I (Underlined) define who I am. And MY shirt says, "TRIUMPH!"

(You may all now return to your regular programming...)

I don't race on the streets, too dangerous for me. Around here the local Huns MC have an annual "run what you brung" day at the drag racetrack. Maybe they have something like that where you live?

Had a guy on a VTX 1300 who wanted to race me up Mt Lemmon, the local twisty mountain road. Turned him down, but I don't see how he could've kept up on that boat anchor. Not that he would'nt have enough power to keep up, but that bike just doesn't have the lean angle our bikes have, and it weighs over 700 lbs.

I can see turning it down under any circumstance. Mt Lemmon has claimed its share of two wheeled victims under normal circumstances not to mention "racing"....a mistake up there and you are ..."TOAST"

you not for nothing we all know the Triumph will woop it, however a lot depends on the rider. I raced for years and I could probably blow a "normal" rider away on a smaller bike then they were riding 9 times out of 10, just due to experience. :

What a pitiful challenge. I hope you do to him what I did to a new FATBOY owner at work. We ragged it on for several weeks before finally cutting them loose. We were at 15mph, when we smiled at each other and rolled on. He jumped in front briefly, until I found midrange second gear - it was over at that point. At 115 mph, I saw him vibrating 'way back' in my mirror and drifting away. His top speed is about 95 mph. When we went to work, I said nothing, but the word got out after he admitted to a couple other HD owners that I beat him, badly. He was shot at pretty hard during lunch and almost cried when he saw me that afternoon. I'm not one to gloat, so I asked him when we are gonna do an "Iron Butt" ride together. Maybe the end of June.
This is the guy who, after I had mentioned how much faster my bike was, asked in front of everyone in his department, "How the he11 do you think a 650cc Triumph is gonna outrun a 1450cc HARLEY DAVIDSON?
What a blast. Go for it!!!

LMAO JC. I think most folks are right, here. I will just keep him guessing, maybe tell him to come back when he moves up to a bigger bike. It is much too risky to race on any highway these days. FriarJohn hit the nail on the head, he would be a butt hole even if he drove a kids trike. But the track idea sounds good...pinks slips huh? I could use an extra $6300....

Heck, don't know too many harley huggers on this board. I like both because I own both, they each have their own character.

Don't know whats more pathetic, racing an 883 or posting a thread about it. . .

Hey Skillet, that's an awesome story! (Normally I would say Cool, or Way Cool, but I saw FJ use the word in one of his posts recently, and I think it's a good adjective...I like it very much, and will continue to use it...thanks FJ! )

Anyway, I enjoyed the tale...thanks.

Race him for pinks. Then once you beat him refuse to take his title because "What would I want with a Harley?"

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.
