Not EVERY one(just every 3rd one!) Why I didn't bring politics into the NGK Sparkplug thread one single time, now did I? Plus, I didn't start this one this time Dad... It's all Merts fault for starting a thread, she's a troublemaker....

for the record....taken from Wikipedia.
South America is a continent situated in the western hemisphere and, mostly, the southern hemisphere, bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean; North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the northwest.
That comes straight from the mouth of Wikipedia. Now if you dont consider Wikipeda to be an accurate or correcrt source that is fine.
However....it appears that referring to the South American Continent is not a fait accompli twist of the tongue or a mispeak Bushism ....neceessarily anyway.

Well Mert . I dint change anyting. I am simply saying that grouping All of the Southern hemisphere south of the US border and referring to it as a continent is not a crime against humanity. Brazil , Peru and all those countries I mentioned are in South America and those were the contries I spoke of. The fact that I said Central is simply cause I view everything south of Nogales Arizona as being a whole nother continent. They aint nothin dividing one from the other but a skinny little canal we built back in the day. I suppose strictly
speaking its all one huge land mass anyhoo.
Thats what us rednecks do.

And to further muddy the waters of continental geographical mispeaks.....
Also from Wikipedia....
Geographically, South America is generally considered a continent forming the southern portion of the American landmass, south and east of the Panama Canal transecting the Isthmus of Panama. Depending on source, South and North America are sometimes considered a single continent or supercontinent, while constituent regions are infrequently considered subcontinents. Geopolitically, all of Panama – including the segment east of the Panama Canal in the isthmus – is often considered a part of North America alone and among the countries of Central America
So we are really just one big ole super continent. Imagine that.

Geologically, South America has more in common with Africa than with North America. It has to do with the breakup of the super-continent of Pangea into Laurasia and Gondwanaland at the end of the Permian period. Sometime during the middle or end of the Jurrasic period both of these large continents (remnants of the former Pangea) broke along a north-south line. North America started drifting west from Laurasia, and South America separated from Gondwanaland and also drifted west. The ithsmus started to form during the Jurrasic as a common leading edge shared by the two drifting continents, but it was only about 5.7 million years ago that a complete land bridge sealed off the connection between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. An interesting sidebar to this exciting drama is that the newly formed ithsmus opened a land bridge which allowed an invasion of species from the north, and set off a round of extinctions South America. In my opinion (probably doesn't account for much) North America and South America share a common westward techtonic drift, but that's about all. To call them part of the same continent is really a stretch. They are two completely separate tectonic plates. I just thought I'd throw that out there. I knew you would all find it tremendously fascinating. BTW, it is this westward drift that is ultimately responsible for all the great riding country in the mountain west. (See, there is my tie-in to motorcycling.) Regards, Cody

I too am a man of Judeo-Christian ethics, and am appalled by his ignorance and his determinatin to eliminate middle class America. I am a Christian, a Penecostal Jew with a charismatic experience. Yet I am a staunch democrat since the last presidential election. I will never vote for a republican again. Personally, I recognize no such limitation and will continue to comment as I jolly well choose. However, since you feel intensive training or extensive experience is required prior to opining on any subject, I’m sure you will refrain from writing about any subject in which you do not have sterling credentials. For instance, unless or until you have held partisan elective office perhaps you should not comment about those who do. The same with senior military rank, economics or the relative merits of different brands of motorcycles.

I seem to recall reading somewhere about a bloke called Jesus in around 30AD who did a lot of religious spouting - and apparently his backgorund was in woodwork, bar-tending (pretty good at serving wine - even when most folks had run out), and waiting tables (the things he could do with a few loaves and a bit of fish!).
Although it is always desirable to have some knowledge on any subject, it isn't essential. And if experience is critical for knowledge, I'm afraid I'm unqualified to say anything about murder, pedophilia, childbirth, homosexuality, psychic phenomena, the Chinese language, presidents, and Harley Davidsons. There are actually many other things I am unqualified to comment on but the list is waaaayyyy too long.
Of course, should anyone want to debate whether the notion of verbal-noun (gerund) is a grammatical entity in itself, or should simply be viewed as a lexeme of the base verb with an "-ing" participle - and then discuss how this affects the traditional view of prescriptive grammar as opposed to a more flexible approach based on a descriptive point of view - then let's get ready to rumble!!

Sorry Dennis, I was just being fascetious about the "being a Christian but not supporting W", because many people that I have been exposed to who are fervent Republicans or fervent Christians (or profess themselves to be at least), have told me in not so many words that the two things, actuall three things, God, W, and Patriotism, are inexorably linked, and you cannot have any without the others (which I of course outright dismiss!), i.e. the worn out argument that if you don't support W's actions, you cannot possibly call yourself a Patriot or possibly support or troops, or ad nauseum...

I believe a lot of people dismissed it because your 'comment' was nothing more than an ad hominem attack, and as such, pretty much meaningless.

Let me see if I have this right, making smart ****** comments questioning the intelligence of GW Bush is perfectly acceptable. But pointing out the facts that John Kerry's grades at Yale were lower than W's and that Al Gore flunked out of divinity school is not? Stating demonstrable facts about leftist Democrats is an ad hominem attack, but attempting to hold a Republican up for ridicule is not? Certainly no double standard there!

Why "leftist Democrats" instead of just Democrats? When I talk about President Bush (as is the case of most every member here, I don't lump "them" all together with some kind of dismissive label like neo-fascist, or right-wing Republicans, kind of along the lines of Sean Hannity (spit) lumping all Democrats or moderates under the wing of "Bush Haters" or "Michael Moore lovers", and all that other tripe! And sorry, the tone of your "demonstrable facts" about Gore were thinly veiled contempt at best. So yeah, some might dismiss that off hand...

I would like to add my own two cents worth of opinion, which (in MY opinion) makes every bit as much sense as some of the repartee I have just finished reading on this thread. (ahem) Blah, blah, blah blah, George W. Bush, blah blah, Ted Kennedy, blah, blah, the Iran crisis, blahdy, blah blah blah, global warming, blah, blah, blah, Harley Davidson (and the Marlboro Man), blah blah, blah, unqualified opinions, blah, blah, blather! But, that's just MY opinion...

Hey! I gots me an idea here, guys!
Siggy, Seein' as y'all seems to know a lot about this here hodgepodge of a language known as English, how's about helpin' out our good ol' boy who's doin' his level best to mangle it every time he opens those thin little crooked white boy lips o' his.
Yep! I be talkin' 'bout a certain Pres-SEE-dent of this here fair land.
I reckon that if Dubya's a willin' to learn to speak somethin' even CLOSE to resemblin' this here language we all speak,(well okay, maybe not ALL of us, maybe only HALF of the people of L.A. nowdays, that is), maybe jus' maybe, that there boy could learn ta communicate with the people that may not tend to agree wit' him 'bout some things.
The way ah figures it, this at least could begin the process o' makin' him look juuuuuust a bit less like one o' them "hayseeds" that just fell off the turnip-truck, if y'all knows what ah mean!
Are you up for this Siggy-Baby???.....I know, it's a tall order, huh?!
My suggestion....start by having him crack open a friggin' Funk and Wagnall.
And while you're at it, can you please help him with that little misconception that he harbors about "thinkin' with his heart". Maybe you can point out to him that that other organ situated between his ears is where that particular function is supposed to begin.
Cheers, Dwight (BTW...you should forget about making a side trip to Massachusetts on your way to D.C. with any intent about helping out Sen.Kerry...I don't think even YOU could teach certain people to be BOLD and train them how to tell some people to f*** off when they need to hear that expression)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

First Dwight.. Siggy would have to locate mr skerry. Hiding under a proverbial slimy (now wet) rock somewhere in Mass) no doubt. He comes out from time to time to speak ill of American soldiers and then returns to his post of duty. (I'm reporting for Duty 2004 Democrat convention). He forgot to tell the Swift boat guys about the duty part. He reported for duty. Back to Mass with his Ketchup queen.
Our boy Bush won twice while mangling the language. It is said that in reality that endeared him to a lot of people. I dont doubt it. He is definitely not a public speaker. I believe I can carry a speech better than he but then I suspect a lot of people can. It just goes to show you that being a good speaker is not a gusrantee of being elected.

And calling Bush a liar and a boob is not showing contempt? Lots of people on this site, including you, have enjoyed heaping scorn and contempt on him. Sauce for the goose....
As for Kerry and Gore being leftists, the facts speak for themselves. Both are extremely wealthy, neither did anything to earn that wealth and both support policies that if followed will make it difficult for anyone else to become wealthy. They both pander to the hard left and are working hard to get the support of the Move-On.org/George Soros crowd prior to the upcoming primaries. Sounds pretty leftist to me!

One of the worst public speakers (by his own admission) to ever hold office was Thomas Jefferson. Somehow he managed. Knowing what you believe and standing for principle is often enough to earn the respect of the American people. On the other hand, no amount of glibness will overcome the lack of a spine.

Well Kevin, I have a little friggin' problem with ANYBODY who's NUMBER ONE RESPONSIBILITY as President of this country is to COMMUNICATE to the freakin' masses(here AND worldwide) OUR collective american goals, OUR collective american ideas and OUR collective american asperations for a better freakin' WORLD, and who CAN'T "speak-a" the language to it's useful best in order to accomplish that goal.(sorry, ol' boy...that tends to show slovenly praticed thought processes)
And I don't give a flyin' you-know-what that the "average" dumb(about-geopolitics)as-a-door-knob American "thinks" that "good old boy shtick" of his is "endearing".
That boy is just an EMBARASSMENT!(and isn't it "endearing" that it only took six years for the previously mentioned hoi polloi to realize(now at a constant 60-some negative percentile) that he doesn't possess the brains to hold that freakin' office!!!
Cheers, Dwight (and BTW...I've said it before...the MAJOR reason that other priviledged numbskull failed in his attempt to unseat that idiot, is that he lacked the guts to say to the "if you question authority, you ain't a good American" veteran, to "Shove it where the sun...well, YOU know! That, YES, he EARNED those freakin' medals on his chest in that OTHER stupid-a$$ war...er...excuse me, UNDECLARED "police-action"[please read a certain Mr.Robert McNamara's recently published little mea culpa on this matter] and that he could do ANY freakin' thing he wanted to do with them, up to AND including throwing 'em over a G.D. So Larry...I guess you're right! In today's electronic media-driven age, I guess finding a suitable person with BOTH intelligence AND forthrightness is a pretty tall order, huh? Hummmm! Wouldn't ya think that with over 300 million persons presently living in this fair land(okay, 250 million or so "really here"), "they" or "we" could find at least ONE person who could "fill that bill", huh? Don't you people ever get tired of this sh!t? I know I get tired of reading it. Go outside and go for a ride. It's a little too late in the year for cabin fever. I don't care if your liberal or conservative, believer or non-believer. You're all touched in the head.
