I dont know about Walcott. It might be an inspired decission by Sven, or the biggest gamble and mistake of his managerial career.
But, i stand by what i said last week. I think England have enough fire power in midfield to not miss Rooney. A 4-5-1 formation with Beckham, Cole, Carrick, Gerrard and Lampard across the middle would be a formidable attacking midfield. Owen up front as a lone striker. I think that is Englands best line up, and a line up that has the potential to go a long way in the tournament....maybe all the way.
However, I will take England being knocked out in the first round if i can have victory for Arsenal next week.

Guilty! I'm guilty! Sorry if I offended anyone. I am somewhat comfortable with myself. I have risen above being offended by anyone. I realized a long time ago that every time I have ever been offended in my life, it was because I chose to be offended. People have made fun of my religion, the way I walk, the way I talk, being a short fat guy with a moonpie face. It does not bother me. I have not violated the "Acceptable Use Policy" in any way. It is not my responsibilty to know what may offend you, although our own convictions should dictate constraint in what we write here. There is the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." That is scriptural, and ultimately fair. Yet from the depths of our politically correct society, the "Platinum Rule" has arisen - "Do unto others as they would like you to do unto them". I can't treat you like you want to be treated! I don't know how you want to be treated. But I do know how I'd like to treat you. That is a good thing, because I'd treat you like I want to be treated - back to the golden rule. There are some who have no convictions, and may say or do anything. I am not surprised by them or offended by them. I did almost violate the acceptable use policy once by thinking about posting a picture in the gallery of me skinny dipping in a very clear local lake. Now that would have offended everybody! Even me. I am sure the comments would have been something like, "Someone posted a picture of a beached whale!". Thanks Shari, for keeping us focused.

Mert,
Well put.
Here are my comments: 1. I had to look up puerile. Doh!
2. I'm partial to hippy chicks cuz I'm a child of the 70s, so I hope nobody, including me, says something offensive to scare you away.
3. I find the religion/politics discussion to be very interesting, except when they turn disrespectful. I usually just check out when they become venomous. Lately, I've become a little more discerning about jumping in. I try to think twice before taking the bait. I do like to try to present a well thought out arguement. Sometimes I pull it off, and sometimes not. That being said, these forums were one of the few highlights of a very long and bleak Minnesota winter.
4. This site may be dominated by Americans (The U.S. kind), but I still like hearing the thoughts and opinions the other nationals.
Anyway, your post was wise and well stated.

True. But for the sake of Argument. (huh) We have North America which consists of the US of AMERICA and Canada. Canadians refer to themselves of course as Canadians. They do not call themselves Canadians of America. Then we have South America which is just the southern continent broken up into a bunch of not united individual entitities who call themselves Brazilians, Guatemalans, Peruvians, et al.....
Only in AMERICA do we call ourselves Americans..
When someone or anyone anywhere in the world thinks of the term America or speaks it....they sure dont think of Guatemala.

Central America.....(a continent consisting of non allied countries none of who refer to themselves as "Americans"
They call themselves Gautemalans and Ecuadorians and Peruvians etc etc. The continent may be referred to as Central America but ... America is America and we are IT.
Ask anyone in Europe if they have been to America. They will of course assume you speak of US..The US of America.
Central America is like a small stepchild.
Silly argument this but .....true.

Kevin and All,
I thought of your very arguement as soon as I posted the other evening. By naming our country the United States of America, we can legitimately call ourselves Americans. You are also right that the name is used so commonly throughout the world that it would be silly to think otherwise. But my subtle intent wasn't lost on this group. (We are a very clever bunch) For us Americans the world certainly centers around us. We sometimes tend to have a myopic veiw of the world, and our news services don't always give the whole picture. My point was that I like to hear opinions and views from people living off the North American continent, like Bedoin and Primero and Gregorz and Ginas, and yes of course, Adey. Others too, don't feel left out. I use that information to gain some perspective on what is REALLY going on out there. At least, I try.
I didn't want to hijack mert's eloquent posting, and I didn't want to start a new little bicker-fest. I was only stating that I like to hear the views of others on non-motorcycle related topics, and if those comments come from distant lands, all the better. I also wanted to say that I like the term earthycrunchyhippietriumphchick. (Heh heh, cool! She said crunchy...)
It could be worse, we could be called "Vespuccians".
Regards,
Cody

Did you realize that you recently crossed the boundary from enthusiast to addict? I savor being an enthusiast. It just fits well with the theme of this board. To me, there is something dark about being an addict. I will have to be judicious with my next 28 posts. Well, maybe not.

Okay! I guess maybe with all the different countries situated on these two continents in the western hemisphere, BOTH of which were named after that 15th century's Italian explorer and map-maker, Amerigo Vespucci...this American "sobriquet"(hey...is that a freakin' FRENCH WORD?[spit]) stuff COULD be a bit confusing to some...but the question, which has baffled the most incisive minds for millennia, still remains...... ...Do Brits consider themselves "European" or NOT??? Cheers, Dwight (nobody's EVER been able to give me the definitive answer to THIS most elusive of conundrums, guys!!!)

Well, I will venture an answer no doubt not acceptable Dwight.
The Brits are not Europeans. They are ENGLISH.
Its that there ENGLISH channel thing they got going on that delineates the difference I would think.

SO...with THAT logic Kevin, you're in essence sayin' that those denizens of New York's Long Island AIN'T really AMERICAN???(NORTH American, of course) Cheers, Dwight (actually, this COULD hold true in minds of some "real" Americans...considerin' New York is one o' them thare "BLUE STATES", huh???!!!)

Dwight ....you dont know just how true that statement is.
I have had this conversation many times with some of my fellow full blooded "Roman" Americans at work and we are simply boggled that New York is a Blue state seeing as it was ground zero for that fairly recent attack by suicidal camel jockeys of the "hostile" variety.
We console ourselves by looking at the map in terms of geographical area and we see that even New York and California were "Red" in the larger less populated areas of both states.
We observe as always that common sense prevails amongst the more "free" areas of America....where folk think for themselves as opposed to being herded about and propagandized by labor unions and big party apparatchnik.
The communist machine works very well in the heart of large industrialized population centers but is ineffective in gaining converts in the heartlands.
Not that we necessarily toe the line on every detail of Republican doctrine.....but in a greater sense we know that when comparing the essence of what makes both parties what they are in this day and age ,,,that the Republican party is a clear winner in terms of being "American" in the greater sense of the word. This can be seen by the fact that the greater proportion of active duty American military and former military more often than not vote Republican probably because "Freedom has a taste known well by those who have sacrificed to protect it as opposed to those who simply reap the benefit of said protection"
When we look at the Democratic party and we see that it is supported 100% by the American communist party, the ACLU ..without a clue, seditionist organizations like moveon.org and a host of others...far left entities that avow hatreed of America....so...
the choice is clear for we few, we band of "Romans"
We are RED , WHITE AND BLUE....forwards, backwards, sideways and upside down.

The isthmus that we call "Central America" is not a continent. The geographic divider between North and South America is the southern border of Panama. Hence all of "Central America" is in North America.
Of course considering the "intelligence" of the leader of the Republican party, I'm not surprised at this error.

bigbill, the term/idea/conflaguration "Central America" has been around a lot longer than the current "leader of the Republican party". I'm sure you knew that.
and therein lies many of the 'issues' of today's individual political chess match.

So I guess when Bill Clinton, LBJ, JFK, FDR, Woodrow Wilson, and all the other Democrats of the last century spoke of the "American" people, and used terms such as "My fellow Americans" they meant something completely different? Typical snotty comment from the party of Algore who flunked out of divinity school and John Kerry whose grades in college were worse than W’s.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

RE "Central America", of course as a geographical term-placement it is very useful. My point was simply- it's not a continent.
RE "Political chess". That's a very good thing, as long as one can recognize the tactics of the opposition. Hmmm, I like that, we'll have to start refering to "The Bush Gambit" or "The Reid Gambit", or the "Limbaugh", or the "Frankin"
(Maybe even the "Dwight" or the "clanrickarde")
