Slavery was always an issue that sooner or later would explode. It was always a moral and political issue, but through political compromise our nation was able to be established. Less we forget that even with the North's 3/5s census count for slaves the South maintain enormous political power right up till the Civil War.
The USA is and always has been divided.

Nam and Korea as well as Europe (NATO) was all about our policy of containment, blame our best and brightest.
