Just watching this on the news, huge loss, spire collapsed. One bright spot is that at least the 16 statues that used to be on the spire are safe. They were removed for renovations befotre the fire.

They said that could cause too much stress on the structure and collapse what is left.

At 10 lb per gallon I don't think that would be a good idea the inner roof would collapse. Helicopters with a controlled sprinkle might work if that exists.
It is an amazing structure and museum I hope they can save the artifacts within. Art restorers from around the world should be decending upon the city to assist the locals.

This morning I saw that the cross inside did survive and I think they said the stained glass windows survived. The windows I heard as I walked into the room so I could be wrong as to what I thought I heard.

It is sad that it happened, but it will rise from the ashes and in another 850 years this will be but one day of its long history.

Yes. Just this morning, a woeful cry of "SANCTUARY, SANCTUARY!" was heard coming from the still intact bell towers.
So Quasimodo still seems to be okay.
(...btw, the name "Quasimodo"...I always wondered if that meant he was never a REAL "Modo"?)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Apparently you're not allowed to eat pre- prepared food with the cathedral precincts. It causes offence to all the lunchpacks of Notre Dame

I'm glad we have the expertise of you Structural Engineers to comment on Trump's remarks. I'm sure you are experts in the field.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Yes, Ade! How DARE you even QUESTION the man and/or his motives, and who always comes across as such a bright, articulate and insightful human being?!!

Yeah, I've heard this too, Alan!
And, ALSO that all quarterbacks, halfbacks and fullbacks who play or have ever played for Notre Dame, are restricted from practicing their plays while under the roof of this cathedral.
(...they're OffenSive positions in American-style football, ya know...a game where the players are actually FREE to use their hands while on the playing field...I believe this sort of thing is even written within our Constitution over here, in fact)

Ah yes, Dwight. We too have a game here where players may use their hands. We call it boxing. Our football teams are also interesting... especially in Scotland, my home of old. There's terrific rivalry on and off the field....as I once heard a supporter shout whilst launching a bottle at the opposing supporters...." Never mind the ball...let's get on with the game!"

Not a structural engineer though randomly dumping tons of water onto an 850yr old fire damaged structure doesn’t sound like a comment provided by a person who could describe themselves as the sharpest tool in the box. A tool, yes maybe. Do forgive me as I only speak from the side of common sense and more than 32 years architectural experience. Strange that the idiot French firefighters didn’t jump on the idea straight away! I apologise unreservedly for MY moronic comment ...

Yes and I am glad Trump is such an expert at firefighting to be able to give such sound advice. Maybe they should have flown him in to direct the effort.

I wouldn't have known any better, I thought it would be a good idea too I never thought it could collapse anything and would have doused the fire faster.
On a bright note the huge organ survived the fire.

Trump has never said he was a firefighter or a structural engineer. Like many of us in tragic situations such as the Notre Dame Cathedral fire we grasp at straws. By all accounts the President was upset over the fire, as were most. I also doubt the President was the only human that tankers came to mind, including French civilians and officials.
The subjects individuals know most about are the subjects we are most prudent and conservative about. Hence tankers weren't used.
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

Absolutely correct, he pays other people to design, engineer, and build them.
I wondered why they didn't use helecopters too, I had no idea it would do any damage.
