Lack of development and diversity was a big problem for Triumph back when they were almost gone. It may be the demise of HD as well, they are not doing very well lately. In the case of HD it may now be too little too late. Electric motorcycles seem to be an emerging market, I have no interest in one but I am told it is instant torque and steady through the RPM range. I never rode one so I can only speak to what I have heard but it is a smart move to try and keep up with times. I hate to see one called Trident since it's not a triple but then again I hated when Pontiac first brought back the GTO and Chevy the Nova as those little rollerskates instead of a muscle car. If the electric bike market takes off and makes money that's security for the company and lets them build the cool retro stuff we like.
