I just copied this from another forum. I thought Dwight may like it.

"I'd just like to annoy all our American cousins (in which I include Canada but then again I am British) and drop the fact that "gas" isn't a shortened form of "gasoline" and isn't American either. A Brit from Lancashire (John Cassell of publishing fame) had a sideline selling oil / petroleum etc which was called "Cazeline" - well before cars in the 1840's or thereabouts. His company was the first to can and sell the stuff and they (the cans) were embossed "Cazeline" or "Caz" which was adulterated over time to "Gas" as cars came on the scene. So please can we convert you chaps to the word "petrol" along with spelling "gaol" properly as well as putting the "u" back where it belongs in "honour" / "colour" etc? No, ? - Fair enough I'll get back in my box then..."
