I had to go back to the ER Friday with a collapsed lung. It was completely collapsed and I had no symptoms. I was out running around doing stuff, no pain, no shortness of breath. I woke up Friday and had a short coughing fit and spit up blood so I called my doctor having just been in the ICU to be sure it wasn't something to worry about. He ordered a cat scan, had trouble getting it done because the insurance was dragging their feet with the precert. My doctor finally had to call them personally to get it. My 11:30am appointment turned into a 3pm scan,I expected him to say I just ruptured a couple blood vessels. I did a few more things and went home. I went to take a nap when my doctor called and said I needed to go to the ER my lung had collapsed.I am still in the hospital, the lower lobe of my lung has not re-inflated yet. I am going shortly to have a larger chest tube put in.

Get well soon. I collapsed a lung when I was 19, it was a couple of weeks in the hospital. I hope you don't have to deal with that

Thanks guys, they used an x ray machine to place the new larger tube. Even with the narcotic and pain meds the deep injections to numb the area hurt quite a bit. Then pushing the larger tube in was also pretty painful. If all goes well I might be out by Friday.

All the best Ian. I guess the old trick of adding a bit of propane and a match to reinflate the old inner tube won’t work this time.

Glad your doc was on the ball too.

Just goes from bad to worse, doctor came in a few minutes ago and told me the new tube isn't working. Radiologist said it looks like the tube came part way out but it's sutured in and I have been careful holding it in my hand when I get up and stuff. She was talking surgery now. Not sure if I prefer surgery since the tube is so painful to mess with.

Well buddy at least with surgery you’ll be out cold and won’t know about it until they’re through. Ask for a morphine pump, that little button can be your friend that first post-op day. Then get rid of it as soon as you can tolerate the pain so you can start healing. I’m convinced sending it away on day 3 got me out of the hospital much faster.

Looks like they are going to try and move the tube again. I told them there is no way I can tolerate it again like the last one. They wanted to take me today and I had eaten again so they would have to do it without sedation like last time and that was just too painful. SO I can't eat after midnight now and they will sedate me for it.

totally new chest tube this morning. Different hole in my chest and everything. I slept through it with the sedation.

Ah, that sounds like they’re getting a handle on the situation. Behave and let them heal you.

Get the heck out of there. A friend of mine went to the hospital years ago and came home with a baby! Thirty years later she still hasn't gotten him out of the house.

Looks like the 3rd chest tube did the trick, air is gone from my chest and the lower lobe of my lung is re-inflated. The doctor said there is some fluid at the bottom of my lung but my body should re-absorb it. Next step is to take my chest tube off of suction and make sure my lung stays inflated. If all goes well I should be home by the end of the weekend.

Glad to hear you're on the mend, my back doctor said to me at one of my follow up visits that i had the hardest job by being the patient, meaning we have to be PATIENT and let our body heal and recover from surgery.

Small set back yesterday, had my 3rd chest tube pulled and was all set to go home but the last Xray showed a small air pocket at the top of my lung. I had to spend another night on 6 litres of O2 but it clear this morning and I am discharged!
