I have had a couple of DNA tests done. Y DNA to test my fathers lineage. Have linked to several cousins and back to the original Hensley family that migrated to the US. Has helped quite a bit in the genealogy area.
I have noticed though that a number of people with a different last name showed up as being of Hensley paternal lineage and some with Hensley last name showed some other lineage. These are termed Non Paternity Events (NPE). Some are adoptions and others are what you might expect over the centuries.
The "family finder" type test did link me to a number of "cousins" in nearly all of my lineages. More of an interesting thing but did give me leads on a few missing ancestors in my genealogy file. Just a tool in genealogy. Have not gone into the medical testing. Am too old to worry about most of that stuff and if my kids want to know they can do the tests, I am not sure the worry is worth the potential positives from it at this point.
