They're probably afraid the picture will show them parked in front of their girlfriend's place and their wife will see it.

I suppose that there isn't a way for a "regular" person to use a computer site to run plates through a State DMV. But, a good criminal or an organized gang could surely pay some money to a crooked DMV person to run the plates FOR them. Couldn't be that hard to do. Why? A professional car or bike thief might want to know where to find his next "aquisition". I'm just postulating here. But the bottom line is, as Larry said, they can take all the pictures they want when it's parked in the street!
