So, I have this happen quite a bit. When I'm out on the Indian, people often (and I'm not exagerating) ask me if they can take a picture of the bike, sometimes with me on it. And occasionally, I get this request when I have my Triumph GT6 out. This happened tonight when I was gasssing up the GT6. I guy pulled into the station, rolled down the window and asked if he could take a picture of the car. I said, "sure". He got out and took three or four pictures of the car from different angles. Then I asked him, "are you a fan of English sports cars?" He said, "kind of, I have two web sites that feature classic cars and I post pictures of them on there." Here's the thing. Am I setting myself up for some kind of scam/harm/potential theft/other by allowing total strangers to take pictures of my vehicles?

People can take pictures of your vehicles any time they want. Especially if you're not there.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Good point, I hadn't thought of that.

Always makes me wonder why people try to cover their license plate when posting pics online. I can take a picture of a bike or car and post whatever I want. Plus, you can't really go looking up plates for information
Always remember to be yourself. Unless you suck. Then pretend to be someone else.

Even if you could look up the information the plates are out there for everyone to see. Not like you get to hide them.
Fifty years ago here in Iowa the registration was required to be visible from outside the car. They eventually figured out that was not a good idea when burglers would use that information to target peoples homes while they were out or stalkers to find home addresses.

I dunno Rich, seems like an unspoken convention. Perhaps it has to do more with masking States, then personal information. Still it is ironic how one of the major participants of data mining will obscure license plates in street view.

They're probably afraid the picture will show them parked in front of their girlfriend's place and their wife will see it.

I suppose that there isn't a way for a "regular" person to use a computer site to run plates through a State DMV. But, a good criminal or an organized gang could surely pay some money to a crooked DMV person to run the plates FOR them. Couldn't be that hard to do. Why? A professional car or bike thief might want to know where to find his next "aquisition". I'm just postulating here. But the bottom line is, as Larry said, they can take all the pictures they want when it's parked in the street!
